Protein shakes?
Are protein shakes meant to keep you full?
I drink a premier protein shake every morning for breakfast. They used to keep me so full right after surgery. Now they don't last long. Within an hour of drinking one I'm hungry again. I figured with 30 grams of protein they would keep me satisfied for awhile. But now as soon as I get to work I'm pulling out my nuts to snack on.

Because they're a liquid, shakes pretty much go right through your pouch since you no longer have a valve at the bottom. Once the swelling from your surgery goes down your best bet to feel full is solid food. It's not the amount of protein but the density of food that keeps you satisfied. That's why we're told not to drink for at least 30 minutes after a meal--to keep the food in our stomach.
I drink a protein shake almost every day but solid protein definitely sticks with me longer than liquid protein. For me, the shake is more convenient while I am teaching and because I am not a morning eater. I have never been a big morning eater. So I might have a shake at 9 AM and then drink water until lunchtime. But this is just how it works for me and may not work for others.
You can't measure your achievements with someone else's yardstick!

instead of eating then, start drinking. Drin****il time for your next meal.
Dehydration mimics hunger. Maybe you aren?t hungry but thirsty.
I do the same thing, I just moved mine to later in the morning. Since I need so much protein and it's hard for me to get 120 plus grams in a day I drink one premier and eat a protein bar for my breakfast. I found that drinking them later and starting with water first, then coffee and last the shake I could then make it to lunch without a snack.

Thanks all! That does make sense that solid foods/dense protein would keep you full for longer. I'm never hungry that early in the morning and the protein shakes are just easier for me to get down. Maybe I need to just adjust the time I eat breakfast. Or either just continue having snacks at work when I get hungry. And yeah, it very well could be thirst instead of hunger. Never thought of that and I really don't get enough fluids in...well I get more in now that I'm working out regularly, but still not nearly enough. So perhaps I should try drinking water whenever I get that hungry feeling.
