Hello, I'm new to this community. I have been in a weight loss/diabetic program since January 2019. Surgery will be sometime in September 2019. I am having this surgery to eliminate my diabetes. Weight loss will not work for this as I have metabolic syndrome. The loss of diabetes is the entire reason why I need this surgery, the added weight loss is a bonus.

Im wondering if there are any others out there like me in my position. I would like to hear from you.

There is no guarantee that RNY will put you in remission.

I am still diabetic, albeit well controlled, 15 years after RNY and at a normal BMI

You would get a better chance of remission getting a DS than an RNY.

I've had diabetes less than 5 years. My surgeon strongly suggested RNY. I also have metabolic syndrome which complicates things without surgery.

They really dont know why diabetes goes into remission for some and not for others. A person could be 300 pounds overweight, have surgery and immediately have diabetes go into remission for life.

Or they can go into remission for a while and have it come back, or they may never see a remission.

From my memory and research, the greatest odds are with DS, approximately 95% chance of going into remission.

With RNY about 70% and with VSG about 50%

Diabetes is never cured, but may require much less medicines, especially after weight loss.

I was pre-diabetic and I take bypass, but I was morbid obesity. Do you diabets is under control with medicines? DS is an serious procedure for absortion...

I take lots of meds for diabetes. The amount is control is unreliable.

Generally if you have been diabetic less than seven years and have not been on insulin, that is your best chance of remission. That is a reason to not keep waiting for surgery.

I had VSG and was told by surgeon that my diabetes may or may not go into remission. I'm thrilled that it did in fact go into remission immediately. I took last two medications up to the day before surgery and have been off them both since day one. Fasting blood sugar was 25 and A1C 18 when I was first diagnosed with diabetes about 18 months ago. Just had blood work done for my upcoming three month appointment and Fasting blood sugar is 5.5 and A1C 5.4.
