Talk to me about what liquids trigger you (dumping)

Do you trigger (dump) on any particular liquids? Lemonade, iced tea, cocoa, latte, mocha, Crystal Lite

What are your go-to liquids other than water?

I'm pre-op, having revision surgery on Tuesday and sort of freaking out about being able to keep myself hydrated post-op. I live in a very warm environment so hydration is hard enough for me already.

I dumped on an Activia, banana, spinach smoothie on 2 occasions. Then the third time I was fine- weird.

Liquids will not make you dump, sugar will.

Yogurt and banana have natural sugars and when you liquify them in s smoothie your body probably absorbed them too quickly.

I dumped on plain yogurt and pineapple. Yet have eaten parts of desserts and not dumped. I also think it has to do with what else you have in your system. When I dumped on the yogurt and pineapple I had not eaten for a lot of hours.

I tend not to eat something again that made me dump and I just avoid sugar in general. I dumped after I added 1/2 cup of strawberries to my usual smoothie. I now have a hard time making myself eat fruit and used to put a frozen banana in all my smoothies. I keep thinking, okay, 1/2 banana would be fine but I'm too chicken. I have found that if I eat a small portion of a sweet treat I'm okay so maybe the dumping is in the past. Not sure how I feel about that. For the last 18 months, when I've wanted something sweet, I think about dumping and my desire goes away. Hopefully, my other deterrent will continue to be effective, SUGAR is the ENEMY and you have it and then you want more and more. It's easier not to get started on that path than to have to go down the path and then turn around and go UPHILL!!! Uphill is good exercise except if you are battling the devil, sugar!!!

I don't drink sugar liquids for the most part; however, I have made the mistake with a green smoothie that had banana in it. I had to learn to pace myself with that if I make them. It wasn't horrible dumping but enough to take note and slow down. I have not even tried Starbucks etc., (something I could see as a treat or weakness if that makes sense), as I know that pretty much anything that most people would buy there would make me pretty sick with the sugar content.

What are your go-to liquids? I'm looking for ideas in addition to water.

I have tried the sugar free flavorings and found them too sweet for me... I don't think they are healthy anyway but since I do drink coffee and I like to have a bit of flavor there I choose to allow that for myself. I drink coffee, (regular or decaff) and water. That is it for me. Sugar is what makes us dump so I would just suggest anything that doesn't make you feel unwell or have a lot of sugar in it.

Sugar is what makes us dump. Specifically, sugar that gets into your intestine quickly. So liquid sugar is the worst. Ice cream will do it for sure. As others note, smoothies if they have fruit. Your body won't care if it's added sugar, or naturally occurring. Sugar is sugar.

One of the easiest ways to regain is drinking calories. You can have the tiniest stomach in the world, and liquid sugar goes right through. You can drink a billion calories a day.

That first year the vast majority of my fluids were Powerade Zero. I tried the lowest calorie Gatorade once, but it still had 80 calories. Way too much.

The mist common complications after surgery start with dehydration. Most nausea comes from dehydration.

We also can have issues with low electrolytes. That's where the Powerade Zero helo ed as well. My doc actually had me add salt to food as well.

Temperature seems to make a big difference in how folks tolerate fluid. Some can't drink them some, while others dislike hot. Sometimes it's the opposite as before surgery.
