Revision soon

i had VSG on March 18,2018.

Acid issues started in late July. Other stuff happened...ok a lot of other stuff. Had my gallbladder out in February hoping it'd help...which it didn't.

I don't have a date yet as the scheduler was out this last week. The surgeon is wanting it soon...May or June.

what advice could you share? I am not really nervous about the procedure but the differences in the after care. I am doing a lot of research but i'm Looking for personal experiences.

Mine was not a revision, but I had gastric bypass on a Tuesday, went home on Thursday, was doing light housework on the weekend and went back to work on Monday. No pain or complications. If it were not for the small incisions on my stomach, I would not have known I had surgery.

I had terrible nausea the day or so after my VSG. Threw up everything that went down for 24 hours. Then everything was great. Until the acid started!

I had my revision to RNY last February in 2018 and don't regret it for a moment. The acid reflux was killing me. The pain was ridiculous. I woke up with instantaneous relief from the procedure. Recently we thought that I had reflux again because I had awful side pain and chest burning but it wound up being a very bad H. pylori infection I'm on antibiotics for rather than reflux. No ulcer so far, thankfully.

I did find the sleeve recovery way less painful. After my VSG I was like, did I actually have surgery?! The RNY was much more painful by far. I have a larger than average RNY and so more bowel was manipulated. They also found my entire sleeve twisted like a corkscrew and hiding between my lungs, so they had to dissect it out before proceeding. So, a much briefer procedure turned into a 3.5 hour one that was far more extensive. One of the lap wounds developed a seroma that got infected and was also quite painful, but I am immunosuppressed so I was unsurprised. Aftercare otherwise was the same. I'd say I was more cautious than average and my pain was higher for longer...but of course I also had my entire stomach adhering to my lungs.

Still 100% no regrets to be GERD-free. I was bummed to not get the DS for a while, however several surgeons had reservations due to other health issues I have. I spent way longer than I should have considering it, most likely.

Like White Dove, my RNY was pretty routine. When I woke up from surgery, the pain was pretty awful but I had very good pain management so did well. My surgeon said I could drive as soon as I was free of narcotic pain killers and so had surgery on a Tuesday, was off pain meds by Sunday, went shopping Sunday. I tired easily but I was walking 10,000 steps by that Monday also. It was much easier than I thought it would be Now, mine was original surgery so as a revision patient, your experience may be more difficult.

I revised from VSG to RNY for the exact same reason. We even thought my bad gallbladder was to blame. My revision surgery was 100% unevenftul. I have a great recovery. The morning after I was up and walking and had walked so far from my room that they had to send someone to find me so I could be seen by my surgeon. I had a 3 day hospital stay (my choice, I could have left after 2). I left the hospital with a drain and that was basically the only difference between the two surgeries. My surgeon made me follow the same food progression as with my original surgery.

Hey Melsbells, I have my revision in 11 days. I'm also a wee bit nervous about the after food/meds/etc. Just want you to know that I'll be nipping on your heals and you are not alone in this.
