Hello Everyone,

I trust that you are doing well. However, I am not doing so well right now. I am 7 years out. With the exception of a bout of reactive hypoglycemia, I have been doing well since my surgery. The problem that I have been having lately is severe leg and foot cramping. It is extremely painful and I just want relief. It usually happens at night. Can any of you recommend which magnesium pills I should take for this that can be absorbed? I went online and started looking at magnesium, but wasn't satisfied. I just figured someone one here is more knowledgeable than I am and more experienced who can lead me in the right direction. Someone, please get back to me with some answers, as the cramping is crazy painful. I look forward to any and all responses so I can get some relief. Thanks much.

Monica

I'm glad the others could help you with magnesium types and dosages.

Personally, I think you need to have your blood drawn and tested right away. Potassium is another huge factor in muscle cramping. It's not unusual for those who are losing large amounts of weight to have potassium levels that are much too low. Low potassium can effect your heart to the point of cardiac arrest. And that is no fun.

Please consider getting a blood test asap, you may be deficient in other areas as well.

Thanks,

That's a good idea to have my blood checked. I just had my labs done back in November and the doctor didn't say anything about my potassium levels. I will go ahead and get my levels checked again, it doesn't hurt anything. I just want to make sure that I am where I need to be. Thanks again.

If you just had them checked in November you're likely fine. I'm a bit hyper sensitive to the potassium issue because it tried to kill me twice.

Are you tracking your vitamins and such though? There's an excellent spreadsheet around here somewhere that lets you input your lab values each time you get them. It works great to see if you're trending a certain direction. If you haven't seen it I will try and post it over here.

Good luck, I really hope the magnesium helps. Those cramps can be so awful.

Thanks,

I actually did not know about a spread sheet to track my lab values. That would be awesome to have. I track the main essential vitamins that I am suppose to take, but it would be great to have the spreadsheet. Thanks again.

Try this one! Make a copy of the spreadsheet and you can edit your own values.

Got it! Thank you so much. This will be a tremendous help in tracking my lab results and numbers so that I can compare them from year to year.

I've heard soaking in Epsom Salt can also help with muscle cramping.

Epsom Salt? Ah yes. When I was growing up my dad would swore by Epsom Salt. I remember him soaking in it all the time. He was a carpenter so often came home with sore muscles from work. I have soaked in it but it's been a long time. May be time to have a good soak in it. Thanks for that suggestion. I will do that.

I do epsom salt soaks! I play roller derby and do a lot of cycling, and it works wonderfully on sore leg muscles. If a full bath isn't feasible, you can soak washcloths in dissolved salts and wrap them around your legs.
