Psychological problems - living after bypass
Cris:
Please don't lump all antidepressants together and just give up on this potential option to help with the feelings you are struggling with.
There are several pharmacological classes of antidepressants. A1 number of antidepressants make up each pharmacological class. Every antidepressant, even ones in the same pharmacological class, act on the body slightly differently.
There are multiple antidepressants in each pharmacologic class that are not as likely to cause a prolonged QTc interval. For example:
- Tricyclic antidepressants - doxepin (Sinequan)
- Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) - paroxetine (Paxil), fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline (Zoloft)
- Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) - duloxetine (Cymbalta) desvenlafaxine (Pristiq)
- Other - bupropion (Welbutrin), trazodone (Desyrel)
There are also certain risk factors that put a person at a higher risk of developing a prolonged QTc interval when taking an antidepressant:
- Age >65
- Female
- Taking high doses of these medications
- Impaired clearance of the drug from the body, for example, from kidney or liver disease
- Taking more than 1 medication that tends to prolong the QTc interval at one time
Cris, with a skilled Psychiatrist who confers with your Cardiologist, it is likely that an appropriate antidepressant can be found for you. The use of such a medication may relieve some of the very painful and distressing feelings that you are struggling with since you had WLS.
I wish you well with your ongoing WLS journey!

Counseling in the United States is more competent than in Brazil. The people on this forum have helped me a lot. Has anyone ever seen yourself comparing your body to the bodies of other fat people and felt that you have a wrong surgical procedure? It's a very big surgery, said the doctor who answered me on Saturday. I did something very wrong, I damaged my body. I have not been able to stabilize myself after 10 months.
Can someone help me?
What specifically have you not been able to stabilize? Too much weight loss, not enough, illness or just body image??
