Surgery in morning
Hi, I am having RNY in the morning and I am terrified. First because I have had MANY MANY surgeries in my abdomen and I am worried that they will start with a scope but have to switch to an open. Second, (which should have been 1st) I am terrified that I will not wake up. It is a gut feeling that just won't go away. And then finially, I am very worried about my back. I had a severely bad back surgery back 2011 and have been seen by pain specialist ever since. One problem from that surgery is that I can no longer lay flat. I am worried about laying flat for the 4 hours of surgery and not being able to move after.
Any advice?
Thanks
~Tina
First...congratulations and good luck!
Can't adress the prior surgery issues, but in regard to the back issue, I had the same problem but surgeon had no problem with surgery because of it.
As far as "not waking up" .... that's a normal worry. This surgery is very safe.
Please post again after surgery to keep us updated!!
As an FYI, my surgery took 40 minutes - yours may take longer because of adhesions, but it shouldn't be 4 hours.
All your other fears are perfectly normal, and if you express them to your anaesthetist, they'll give you some Versed and you won't care.
This is a big deal, and it would be weird if you weren't nervous.
Good luck!

I was a little worried, but I decided I was going to have a good time. Weird I know. I was joking with everyone from admittance to the operating room staff. I had them in stitches. The only person who got mad was the pre-surgery blood draw person. "This is serious business, I don't think you should be joking." My wife saw that I was about to explode with laughter and said I exercised pretty good control with her. I said it was self-preservation - that lady had lots of needles!!! Have trust in them and try to relax. I had a noise cancelling headphone with music - I was doing deep breathing and listening to it all the way to the hospital. Good luck.
