Weight loss stall after only 1 month post-op---panicked

Hi, I had my RNY on Dec. 10. The surgeon recommended that surgery because I've had a challenging metabolic problem. Background: five times in my adult life, I've lost 100 pounds, but once I hit that mark (weighing about 200 pounds from a 300 pound start) I regain all the weight. Also, I've worked with metabolic doctors, gastro doctors, etc. in my weight loss and each time, I'm resistant to carbs. If I ate more than 5g of carbs per day, I wouldn't lose weight. According to my doctors and RNY program, this surgery was a chance to "reset" my metabolism. Well, in the first 4 weeks, doing mostly liquids, so lots of protein and minimal carbs, I lost 20 pounds. The minute I start eating soft foods three weeks ago, I haven't lost one pound. I fluctuate between 277 and 280. I'm terribly upset. My recommended carb intake is 20 or under, and the first week I did eat hummus and yogurt, both high in carbs. Starting the second week, I tried to cut back on carbs, but it didn't make a difference. How is this possible? I'm following everything EXACTLY like I should, measuring, drinking fluids, 60g of protein or more per day--I think my caloric intake is around 300 to 400 calories, yet for 3 weeks, no weight loss. I'm so worried that this surgery didn't work. I looked back at my last two weight loss attempts, because I have a record of it. I lost MORE weight with those attempts, than I have now!!! I just can't understand how that's possible. I met with my surgeon three weeks ago, so before the huge stall started. Have any of you experienced anything like this? I look through the message boards and don't see any of you having such a stall so early on. Thank you for reading.

It's totally normal as your body is trying to figure out what's been done to it. Type 3 week stall in the search bar above--pages and pages of posts come up. Just follow your surgeons directions and give your body time. The weight doesn't go on or off overnight. The main thing is follow the plan don't stray from it please.

I lost 16 lbs the first month. I, too, thought the surgery wouldn't work for me - but look at my stats in my signature line. I think those 30-lbs-the-first-month losers are the exception rather than the rule. Also, almost all of us have our first stall right out of the gate - sometime within the first month or so. As Karen said, search for "three week stall". It happens to almost everyone. Mine lasted for two weeks. NYMom's lasted for 3.5 weeks. Don't panic yet!

A stall in the beginning is completely normal as well as stalls throughout your journey. When reading on here, you'll read a lot of stories about people who plummet to goal before their first year is over, and that's fantastic, but you can not compare your journey to anyone else's.

My first stall was also around where you are now and lasted for 5 weeks. Since then, I hit a hard stall every other month or so that lasts for weeks on end. It's discouraging. But if I look at my overall weight trend (I use a Fitbit Aria scale to weigh every day and it tracks the trend) I am losing at a steady (but slow!) rate. I won't make my goal by next month (my one year mark), but I'm confident I WILL get there. And so will you if you stick to your plan :)

also, pay attention to inches and how clothes fit. I tend to drop sizes when I'm stalled, not when I'm losing

Just stopping by to reinforce what others have said. This is totally normal, it is called the "Three Week Stall" and it happens to everyone. Some people are lucky and only stall for a week or two, others for over a month! It is your body adjusting to the weight loss. You will break free of the stall if you keep on with the program, I promise. Also, prepare for more stalls along the way, because this isn't the last one. Most have periods of rapid or at least consistent weight loss broken up by periods of little to no losses. Again, this is just the body adjusting.

Otherwise it sounds like you're doing great with calories and protein! Keep it up!

At 4 weeks I had lost 30 lbs & I was stoked, but now I am at 6.5 weeks & am only down 37 lbs total I was wondering the same thing you are "did this just not work for me?" But based on these comments I feel better that it's a normal thing. I figured since the first couple weeks were all liquid & pureed foods that that's where the big loss came from & now I'm eating more solid foods it will be slower. Just didn't think it would be THIS slow. Hang in there & hope for the best.

Thank you all so much for responding. Wow I didn't know about these stalls. It's just crazy that I lost so much more weight in this time frame the conventional way. I just hope my surgeon is correct in saying that this surgery will reset my metabolism and I'll be able to push through that 200 pound roadblock that I've always had in the past. Well, thanks again --- I really appreciate the reponding posts! Good luck to all of you!
