Question about Vitron-C (Iron)

I started on some supplemental iron, Vitron-C, this week at the direction of my surgeon. Have been doing three multi Vitamins with iron since surgery as well. My levels are on the low side of the normal range, per the bloodwork from last week.

I've had a headache every day since starting the Vitron-C, which is not normal for me at all... it seems like the opposite of what should be happening with additional iron! Frustrating. Anyone else have this experience? I wonder if trying a different brand would be a good idea.

I'm not sure how reliable a source this is, but it says that excessive iron can cause headaches as well. I didn't know this!

if you want to try a different kind of iron, a lot of us use carbonyl or heme iron because some of the more popular versions are hard on your stomach

Ahh interesting!

Can you recommend a brand of carbonyl or heme?

I've never taken heme iron so someone else may need to help out with this one - there are some people on here who take it.

the brand of carbonyl iron I've taken for probably two years was discontinued about a year ago, so I bought up every last bottle that I could find - including bottles on eBay and amazon - so I have enough for about another year. But there are people on here who like this brand of carbonyl. I'll probably try these after I run out of my current ones:

Vitron C is carbonyl iron but you do need to add additional vitamin C to absorb it effectively. It's what I have taken and labs show it is helping.

I'm in the process of switching iron supplements so I have been reading through a bunch of old posts.

One thing I read about Vitron-C is that there is not enough Vitamin C in it to absorb the amount of iron it contains. From what I read you need 200mg of Vitamin C for every 30mg of iron.

Below is the carbonyl iron I have seen recommended in the past. I just ordered it so I haven't actually tried it myself yet. I have been taking ferrous sulfate iron and it doesn't agree with my stomach so I'm switching.

Feosol carbonyl iron

Good luck!

I take Proferrin (brand name) heme iron. I like it because it absorbs better than other types of iron, does not cause GI issues and doesn't have contraindications with vitamins containing calcium, et al.

Wait, what? With proferrin, you don't have to separate it from calcium?

Personally, I'd ditch the vitamins containing iron and switch to the "Silver" type ( for people over 55 ) and just take the carbonyl. That may also emilinate the headaches. Maybe? Speak to your surgeon about this, of course, before deciding anything.

At roughly a year or so out, I had to switch to the carbonyl iron and start on the "Silver" multis to get my iron levels up.

The "ferrous" type irons aren't absorbed as well as the carbonyl or the heme iron. Ferrous sulfate is the most common form found in multis with iron. All ferrous sulfate does for me is constipate me. I got zero benefit from taking it. YMMV.

I woke up in between a memory and a dream...
