Food taste and protein
I'm 2 months post op RNY. Down 87 pounds already. I find I don't like food anymore. Things I used to love don't excite me by taste. Literally nothing sounds or tastes good to me. Does this change over time? I'm also struggling to get the proper amount of protein. Anybody have tricks to get the power to resolve completely. I try to get 1 serving in my morning coffee, 1 for lunch in a sugar free coco and another with dinner(coco). Any help would be appreciated.
Congratulations on a great start. Your taste will change and texture will be something that never came into play before but will now. It's a trial and error period for awhile. I'm a year out and still find things that don't work with my pouch. I can not eat scrambled eggs or anything that is heated in a microwave and my taste buds still don't like things I liked before.
As you know protein is key for a healthy recovery and weight loss hense the concern. If you don't tollarate your current protein try another brand. I use Barriatric Advantage cafe latte but you have so many choices just keep trying till you find one that works for you.
I wish you the best and promise as you become more familiar with the new you the easier everything becomes.

re: food taste - for many (most?) of us, appetite and hunger comes roaring back sometime within the first year, and things get harder after that. It's so much easier to lose weight when you're never hungry, so take full advantage of that!! I hoped and prayed I'd be one of those whose hunger never comes back, but alas, I was not. It does come back - for most of us. But in the mean time, embrace the period of never being hungry and not being interested in food and lose as much as you can!
I would sometimes mix protein powder in with food - for example, an unflavored powder into savory foods, or something like chocolate or vanilla powder into yogurt or sugar free pudding (although plain powder would work here, too). I also used to drink Unjury chicken broth-flavored protein (made with warm water) the first few months when I wasn't always crazy about having something sweet.
I'm 2 years and 4 months out and agree completely with the above posters. I urge you to "enjoy " not enjoying your food. It's a once in a lifetime gift. As mentioned your hunger and appetite is likely to come back and although you May continue to dislike foods you've always liked in the past, I've found foods I've never liked (good and bad) to really be enjoyable so things do change. Use this time to explore all the healthy things you might like so you can use them later on when you get hungry and need a good choice. I loved having the unjury chicken broth early on because o was so sick of sweet. Best of luck to you and congratulations.

I found that my desire for food came back about six months out but like others have said, it wasn't the same as before.
To get my protein levels up high, I focused on getting protein at every meal and snack. I used plain grass fed whey protein powder in anything where milk or cheese would taste OK. While you will WANT to get clean healthy proteins long term, right now it's vital to provide your body with the protein it needs to heal AND to re-sculpt your body as you lose weight. Connective tissues are made out of protein so as your fat stores are depleted the only way your body can repair the sagging infrastructure is with protein. THIS DOES NOT MEAN YOU WILL AVOID SAGGING SKIN but your connective tissue can't self repair without protein so it will ONLY HELP YOU :)
One of my favorite easy sources of protein, even today, is a scoop of vanilla whey protein into a cup of Chai tea (just the Chai tea bag - not the sweet powder mix).
Don't feel guilty about using protein Ready to Drink (RTD) shakes or the powder right now while you're struggling. Keep trying healthier options because at some point they will probably feel and taste better.
An example of changing tastes - I will think that a slice of pizza hut's pan pizza will be AMAZING! I'll have a couple of bites and realize it's just not the same. It's good - but not crazy good. I still LOVE a good steak! I still love BBQ chicken and other foods, but most of bad foods I had before just don't taste worth the calories. Chicken pot pie is another example - I keep THINKING it will taste amazing, but it just isn't the same. I'm using this to my advantage :)

Protein won't do a darn thing for the extra skin many of us have grown to cover our fat! There is nothing to "self repair" when you have more skin than is required for the volume of flesh underneath.

At two months post-op, your protein should be coming mostly from real food, not from shakes. Take a look at the daily menu thread to see what people are eating; meals should be lean, dense protein with MAYBE a bite or two of veg. Lean meats, Greek yogurt, and other full-fat dairy should make up the bulk of your diet and you'll have no trouble reaching your protein goals that way.
