Truly, laparoscopic vs. open is MUCH EASIER (I've had both). I only took 2 weeks off, but could have been back in a week if I absolutely had to (desk job). What kind of work do you do?

See that's the thing. I have a desk job too. The most physical part of my job is just getting up and walking to the bathroom. I told my supervisor I expected to be out two weeks tops! She said if my doctor can absolutely guarantee that I will only be out for two weeks then that's fine, but she finds it very unlikely. She said she knows others who work in our department who have had the surgery and was out for six weeks.

I just don't see it being nowhere near six weeks unless there are unforeseen complications or something. Anyway, I talked it over with my mom and she the thinks I should just go for it anyway. She said if I lose my job I lose my job, but that this is more important. Granted, the only reason I took this job was because they had insurance coverage for the surgery. I don't particularly care for it at all and was planning on finding something else as soon as I had the surgery. I'm just so conflicted right now. I really just want to go for it and pray that I won't need more than two weeks to recover so that I still have a job to come back to. Honestly though, if they are willing to let me go because of this they truly could let me go for anything weather I have the surgery or not.

I'll just have to discuss with my doctor at my pre-op appointment. I need to call them first thing monday morning anyway because on my approval letter I got in the mail it has the wrong dates on it. It has inpatient stay 1/11/19-1/14/19. My surgery isn't until 1/23/19.

I agree with your Mom that your Health is the most important. And the complication rate is very low these days which would be the most likely reason you'd need to be out more than two weeks. Perhaps supplying recent statistics to your boss would calm her?

The more I think about it the more I just want to go for it and hope for the best. My mom has already rescheduled her doctors appointment so that she can stay with me at the hospital. I'm just so thankful she is being so supportive!

I emailed my boss months ago when I first started this process letting her know I was preparing for surgery and that I didn't have a surgery date yet, but would let her know as soon as I did. I just wanted to give her a heads up. She never replied to my email. Once I got my surgery date I emailed her again letting her know the date and that I only expected to be out for 2 weeks. She emailed me back telling me we need to sit down and discuss this. I never mentioned in my email what kind of surgery it was as I really didn't want to disclose that info. So that's what we did yesterday....discussed everything. She told me she needed more details regarding the surgery and needed to know if it was elective or a surgery I needed. I told her what it was and the reasons I felt like I needed this surgery. I mentioned my blood pressure has been really high lately. That was just one of my many reasons. She told me that's what medication is for and that she's on it herself for high blood pressure. Sigh...she's also not over 300 pounds though and struggles with everyday activities.

I totally understand her position. She can't afford to have someone out when we are already short staffed as it is. And I'm not able to use fmla since I don't qualify for it yet. Which is what she wants me to do...wait to have the surgery until I qualify for fmla. That's seven months away though. I feel as if I am barely making it to the 23rd. I don't know if I can wait another seven months. My body is physically tired and in constant pain. Just from walking from the parking lot to the building where I work is exhausting and I feel like I am going to collapse. Besides, if I wait I'll have to go through the whole process again and get approval from my insurance again etc.

Great idea regarding showing stats to my boss. I think I'll do that and have another chat with her. She is just so determined that it's going to take me six weeks to recover. Even after my open surgery and having six weeks off, I felt like I could have returned to work 2 weeks earlier as I was out shopping, attended a concert and went on job interviews. Everyone is different.
