Hot Tea

So I have been under the weather for about two weeks, nothing serious just the crud (common cold symptoms) and we have a Keurig machine at work. I have been making myself one cup of this Chai flavored Black Tea for the last three days just because it seems to help. However, I am nervous about the caffeine. Im almost 4 years out and I have avoided all caffeine, (sodas, coffee, sweet tea, etc) like the plague.

Anyone else drink Hot Tea? Are we OK to drink it being this far out? The WLS medical staff scared me with the "ulcer" presentation and Im not trying to go there.

It depends on the surgeon/program - my doctor allows caffeine, with no limitation. Other programs say to eliminate it for life.

I would be careful of the chai tea pods though, as they may have a fairly high sugar content. You might want to check that out.

Generally chai tea is made from black tea, which (along with Oolong) tends to have the highest caffeine content of the different teas (although still generally lower than coffee). As an alternative, if you're seeking hot tea, you may want to try and green or white variety which tend to be very low in caffeine. Or you could drink an herbal tea (tisane) which have no caffeine.

The only reason I was drinking this kind is because its the only tea we had in house.. we buy these different Keruig K-Cups for clients, mostly coffee and Hot chocolate..but I think maybe I will just go buy some of those Green Tea ones like you said. Im not trying to deal with an ulcer.

My surgeon recommends coffee in moderation due to the diuretic factor but as long as I am getting in plenty of water he is fine with caffeine. He does urge against carbonation early out and I haven't tried that due to the discomfort some report.

Hi there! I drink 2 k-cups of Chai Black Tea (plain, not the kind with sugar) every day.

My surgeon allowed caffeine after 3 months.

175 pounds gone!

there doesn't seem to be a consensus about this among surgeons. Some allow it, some don't. Some limit it, some don't. Some make you wait three months...or six months...some let you drink it right away. My take on this is that it probably isn't all that harmful (unlike things like NSAIDs). And tea has a lot less caffeine in it than coffee does.

Cat you hit the nail on the head, it really doesnt seem to be very "black and white" across the board. I bought some green tea so Im just going to go with that.

Even though there seems to be varying opinions, I will just keep erring on the side of caution and once this cold is gone, I will be 100% caffeine free again.

I was amazed though at all the different "regulations" by the different surgeons on this subject.

My surgeon only had me wait 30 days or so before allowing caffeine back in, and he didn't give me a limit, but recommended switching to decaf after a cup or two of regular coffee if I'm in a "drink coffee all day" kind of mood. But a cup or two of regular isn't a big deal for my plan
