hi all! I am new to this journey and feeling nervous. I just attended a required bariatric seminar at my local bariatric clinic. I've now had all the referrals sent and ROIs signed. I'm scheduled for my first dietician meeting Wednesday. I meet with the Psychologist mid and end of January.

I think this is the right move for me but boy I'm nervous. Im not really sure my purpose of this post but I thought I'd reach out and see who has wisdom to share! My journey will likely be Roux-en-Y.

I've discovered some friends who are sooo supportive however, I have one who is nearly shaming me. She thinks the medical field is a total scam and fat phobic. Ugh! I wasn't expecting that.

Just thought I'd say hi. :)

Welcome to the group! This is a good place to research and ask questions. You'll find that there are people in all stages of their journey and they are all willing to share their lessons/learnings! Good luck with your process!

Hi MamaKate!

You came to a great place to get information and, best of all, support.

I had RNY 3 months ago. During my pre-op time, I quickly found that it was important for me to carefully choose who I told about my upcoming WLS. Even now that my weight loss is really starting to show, I am very selective in who I tell about it. There are some people who are just plain nosy and others who can't wait to chastise you for "taking the easy way out!"

The few people in my life that I have told about my RNY are those I know honestly care about my health and happiness.

I would suggest not wasting your time or energy trying to convince the naysayers that you are doing the right thing for yourself. Spend that energy on people and things that will help you along your WLS journey!

Welcome MamaKate! I hope we see you here again. It's a great place!

Kate, welcome!

I too was incredibly nervous about my surgery as the time approached, and had pretty extreme swings between wanting to move forward and being freaked out at the thought of having my insides rerouted. But by the time my surgery date actually arrived (right around 17 months ago), I somehow had put all of my worry behind me, and was calm and 100% in. My RnY has been a life-saver to me, and that is not an exaggeration. I am so, so grateful to have been given this awesome chance to reset my health and my life!

I told very few people about my upcoming surgery, mostly just my family and a very, very few friends. The truth is a lot of folks are uninformed, judgmental, and otherwise just plain ignorant about the benefits and risks of WLS. I'm sorry that you're receiving your shaming friend's ignorant statements - and they are ignorant. Hang in there. Your health is your business, not theirs, and they are definitely out of line.
