Does drinking carbonated beverages stretch the RNY pouch?
I can't do anything other than explain my experience, so here it goes.
17yrs after my RNY, I have regained weight, by not tracking and drinking beer. Now that I am back and focused to get on track, I have reduced my caloric intake, think about what I am eating, and no longer drink the beers or diet sodas. Had plenty of carbonation over the last 3yrs. Not proud of that, considering the main source. I would feel overly full and bloated, whether a beer or diet soda.
I can tell you that I am eating 800 calories, some days struggle to get that much, and although not exactly like right after the surgery, I am not hungry, still feel full when I eat, and find it a little difficult to eat that much yesterday and today.
Not sure if others have experience with the pouch stretching, but I can tell that if I put in the work again, I can lose the regain and start living healthier.
For me, I will stick with water, coffee, unsweet ice tea, herbal teas, and crystal light. ~Good Luck
I'm fairly certain you can't streth your RNY pouch with carbonation, however carbonation makes many of us feel bloated an uncomfortable anyway.

I don't think you can stretch the pouch, either, but I can't digest diet pop very well. I want to vomit (and do) immediately after drinking it, especially if it's a can that's out of the fridge, is cold, and is full of that strong carbonation. I don't know if anyone else has had this happen.

It is a liquid, you can't stretch your pouch with it. You have no pyloric valve excess liquid will empty into your intestine. That being said, many people find the carbonation uncomfortable to drink, and/or just an unhealthy choice that is a slippery slope to other unhealthy choices. Other people can tolerate no problem.
My surgeon used to say no carbonated beverages, He changed that about 2 years ago after going to a Bariatric medical conference and saying there was really no medical evidence to restrict as long as it was sugar free. he does recommend waiting 6 months just because it is important to prioritize getting essential fluids such as protein and water in during those months...

Nope. Carbonation cannot stretch your pouch. I drink a ton of diet soda. I can't eat more dense protein now than I could a year after surgery.

In my experience -- as long as the carbonation doesn't cause discomfort -- the biggest problem is sugary sodas, and drinking with meals.

From my surgeon's staff - not the pouch that stretches, but a softening of the stoma. That way food transits too fast. Take it or leave it.

Years ago I was at a pre-surgery support group where they did this demonstration.
They filled a balloon up with soda, tied it closed and put it in a large bowl.
During the meeting there was a large explosive pop as the carbonation in the balloon built up and it burst. We were all too scared to ever drink soda again.
Later, I realized that the experiment was a trick and that the pouch could not fill up and explode because it is open on both ends.
That is when I went back to diet sodas.
