Pre Surgery Weightloss

My surgery is scheduled for 11/28/18. Going for my pre op on 11/5.

I lost my required weight quickly and an additional 17lbs. So that is my new required pre surgery weight.

my problem is I have gained back 6lbs and am having a real hard time losing it. Am working on my eating issues with a therapist but seem to be stuck.

Please only kind advice, I'm in another support group and some were not very kind. I can beat myself up, don't need help in that area. Thank you

Hi Pattid53:

I feel your pain. I had my RNY at the end of August 2018. My pre-op requirement was to lose 10% of my starting weight which was 26 lbs. I lost 19 lbs really fast and my bariatric medical provider told me that I didn't have to lose the weight so fast.

Well, my ears heard that as, "its okay to slack off on my diet!" I gained 7 lbs back and my scale wouldn't budge. Then a kind soul in a different support group told me, "don't worry, you will lose the weight you need to lose during the 2-week pre-op liquid diet."

I wasn't so optimistic and still fought my scale as time got shorter. I stuck to the 2-week pre-op liquid diet and stopped weighing myself everyday.

I was weighed on the day of my surgery and guess what? I lost a total of 27 lbs! Just 1 lb over my requirement.

My suggestions are:

  1. Don't weigh yourself everyday. Your weight fluctuates day to day. Any slight increase in your weight may increase your anxiety. Anxiety tends to make me want to eat.
  2. Follow your diet plan to the best of your ability. Track everything you eat on paper or in an app. There are many apps such as My Fitness Pal.
  3. If your program requires a pre-op liquid diet, try to follow it as closely as you can. This should lead to the remaining weight loss you need.
  4. At least in my program, the "required" weight loss was a guideline and not an absolute number. The staff in my program was looking to see if I could implement the measures needed to change my current habits to those of a healthier lifestyle.

Come back to this forum frequently. There are many supportive people with great advice from their WLS experiences!

Best of luck!!

Joyce,

thank you for your help. I noticed our stats are pretty close. I have my pre op app on Monday so I will find out then if I need to do the liquid diet. But I'm thinking that I might do it anyway so it can help me start off on the right foot.

everything you said sounds very helpful and I appreciate the help!

I also suggest measuring, weighing, and tracking every single thing that passes your lips. It will be a way of life after surgery, may as well get a jump start. It would be helpful for us to have an example of your menus so we might offer other suggestions of what to switch up.

Make sure you're drinking plenty of water-64 oz minimum, but I seem to lose best if I'm at 80-100 oz.

feel free to join us on the daily menu thread. It's a great way to get food ideas and see what everyone else is eating in various stages. I started posting pre-op, and even posted during 4 weeks of liquid diet (2 weeks prior and 2 weeks after surgery) even though my menu was "protein shake, broth, SF jello." Lol

Thank you for the feedback. I'm sure my problem is I stopped measuring and weighing my food. I was doing that originally when I started all my Nutritionist, group, medical appointments. I was so gung ho I started right away and lost quickly that I fooled myself into getting complacent.

Im so glad I found this site. Everyone seems so very helpful

I've been weighing and measuring for a year now and still know I can't eyeball my food and have any kind of accurate idea of how much I actually ate. After surgery, it is super easy to overeat and make yourself sick if you don't know how much you're eating.

Do you have a diet to follow two weeks prior to surgery? I didn't lose weight before surgery when I still had my normal stomach (let's face it, it's hard) but I was on a two week liquid diet before surgery. I could have protein shakes, greek yogurt, sugar-free jello, and broth. I lost 12 lbs over that two weeks. So that might be an answer for you.

I second WriterGurls suggestion that you get a digital food scale off of Amazon and weigh your portions. You will obviously be able to eat bigger portions now, but it's a good habit to start since after surgery you will be weighing out 2 oz of deli meat or chicken breast or cheese or whatever proteins you eat.

Good luck!

I do have a scale from many years of dieting! Not sure if my surgeon does the pre liquid diet but think I might do it anyway just to get my numbers lower and to help for after the surgery.

thanks so much!
