Seven years ago this week I changed my life... ask me anything (good or bad)...
Hello. I'm going through the pre-certification process with my insurance company. It's a six month process. I've been asking everyone that's willing to talk about their surgery if problems with bowel issues is common after surgery. I'm doing a lot of research. I like to hear directly from those who have had the surgery. Thanks.
Depends on what you call bowel problems I guess. I never had the constipation issues others had, mostly because I developed a bit of IBS and lactose intolerance post surgery. So that was kind of a good news/bad news deal.
Later my gall bladder crapped out, I got a stone stuck in the common duct, and my appendix exploded... but that could have happened at any time.

Audrey,
You are truly an inspiration! I had a VSG 2011, developed severe GERD which eventually became Barrett's esophagus. Am being revised to RNY 11-28. My question is embarrassing but I need to know. I have read that post RNY fecal incontinence and flatulence that can clear out a room can be a real issue ie: Al Roker discussed his episode of fecal incontinence at the White House. Have you experienced any of this?

Not Audrey, but I am 14.5 years out and have never, not once, pooped myself!
Also, as long as I don't eat white/processed carbs, I rarely pass gas and if I do, it doesn't smell any worse than anyone else lol.. If you eat carbs, all bets are off on clearing the room, but my two guys and dogs are waaaay worse than anything I could produce!

What Kim said. Actually my husband joked about it tonight... he made paella and I had a spoon or two of rice and peas with the yummy shrimp and mussels and sausage and etc and he said right away "you will be sleeping downstairs, right?" Carbs equal smell, at least for me.
Never had fecal incontinence, except when I tried a bite of my son's red, white and blue Twinkie once (they don't make em like they used too). I can't imagine what Al ate to accomplish that, maybe a Skittle :D

PS: having said all of that, I know there are a few people on this board who would insist: never, ever trust a fart.

Thanks Audrey and Kim! I think maybe with the DS that incontinence is more of a problem (I hope!) lol
