drinking after surgery
You sound so much like me, except this year, my drinking became daily.
And if I did not read about other people becoming alcoholics after WLS, I probably would not have been so aware that I am at the edge of an abyss.
Thankfully , like you, before I took that last step I "woke up" and stopped. And the weight gain.. Not only calories from alcohol, but my ability to eat more. Everything adds up.

I agree had I not read the danger for us I would not have stopped. I was not daily but I was going out for drinks 2 (at minimum) to 4 times a week on my way to daily. 2 to 3 drinks a night. I never was driving. Went on for about 5 years. Very social time.
Sometimes I have been tempted to start drinking again when going through some stress like my recent health scare but I think about maybe next time I will not be able to stop as easy. I have gotten use to water or a soda when out ... we don't go out as often now.
also agree when drinking you eat mindlessly. Not good all around.
Kathy I want to emphasize that I know you to be a nice person and a kind person. If that weren't true your post wouldn't have caused anyone to miss a beat.
It's only because of a long positive relationship with you that your post stood out. I understand poor wording; everyone here knows I do it all the time. Perhaps the apology should emphasize then the poor wording and not any misunderstanding? Because honestly there aren't too many other ways your post could be understood.
As a newbie I understood exactly what you were saying. (or I believe I do). We all know we can't hear tone when we type. Nor can we hear someone speaking the words the way they are truly saying. Sometimes, this is a problem when communicating through word vs physical speech. I am sure had she said this face to face in her own words/tone you guys probably wouldn't bat an eye. I think the ladies here have read too much into what you were saying honestly. YOU said "I can see it from your point of view that everyone lost their minds in their replies" that is not saying she feels anyone lost their minds but she understands how would could see it as so (doesn't mean she agrees with it). (because of the response the OP has made). All she did was put her self in as a newbie and thought, I can see how you might seen this extreme but they are coming from a good place. I really think if you guys knew Kathy, like you are saying you do, then you would have been able to understand what she was trying to do? Like they say you get more bee's with honey than vinegar. JMO anyways.
It is a true fact by some surgeons and others allow alcohol, but usually not until one is in maintenance.
Of course there are those who think they can drink at a month out or are OK doing small quantities nightly, but the fact is if they don't develop transfer additction they end up with regain due to the useless calories from the alcohol. Wine is high in both sugar and calories.
I have a friend who has had 4 WLS. Two lap bands, gastric bypass, and overstich. She has gained her weight back with all of them due to her refusing to give up alcohol. She insists that the surgery failed her and not the other way around. I am waiting for her to call me to let me know she has liver disease or her husband to call and tell me she is dead.
As for your friend if they don't want to give up drinking then I feel WLS is not a good thing for them.
Thank you for actually reading my post and not passing judgement. He feels just as you do and he doesn't want it because he won't give up alcohol.

4 surgeries for your friend, that's insane! I wish her the best and hope she comes around to a healthier way of living at some point in her life.
