I was never told this. I was not a big drinker before surgery and I am not now. Every once in a while I will have a beer or glass of wine. Like maybe five or 6 times a year. It doe**** me hard. But the effect doesn't last long. I only drink one drink because I feel a little paranoid about what it must do to my liver. That if it hits me that hard, it can't be good for my liver. But I don't know if that's true or not, LOL.

Totally get it.... As I've stated countless times, I've never been a drinker and I wasn't asking because I want to have a drink, I don't, but I was curious about what he was saying.

If in the future (i will) I decide to have a glass of wine to celebrate something, thats my decision. I was simply asking a question not for people's judgement.

Glad there are realistic people on here like you that actually live life. WLS doesn't mean I stop living, it means I've been given a second chance at living healthier. I even called my surgeon today asking him about this and he said, "ignore it, during the first year you must avoid it but nothing wrong in celebrating a milestone, it's like celebrating your wedding." He couldn't be more right.

The rate of alcohol abuse among gastric bypass patients is very high. Between addictive tendencies that can no longer be indulged with food and the enhanced effects of alcohol it is an extremely high risk.

Ha! I was bored yesterday and decided to look through my gastric bypass bookmarks. :)

Hope all is well.

In general, it is best to stay away from alcohol. It's empty calories, it will hit you very hard, and there is a serious risk of transfer addiction.

I would say you can "never drink" after surgery the same way you can "never eat chocolate cake" after surgery. Some people can manage it, other people can't, but in either case you are definitely best staying away from it if you want to remain at goal.
