I live in a city- and most of the neighborhood public schools are crappy. I'd sooner sell my soul then send my son to the neighborhood public high school. So in recognizing that the city has crappy schools- they've made special admission public schools with specific acceptance criteria. You can pick 5 special admit schools to apply to. (Of about 40 total). Then there are charter schools that are lottery based (or some are actually based on who you know...). We look at all our options-- good thing we do because tonight's tour was definite no for us. Sizes of the school vary greatly.
my older son went thru the process two years ago and got into all 5 of his special admit schools and is in the best high school in the city. My younger son's grades are strong but standardized tests are weak, so his options are different because the most sought after schools want high test scores.
Kids in 6th grade and up take public transportation to and from school- they provide passes for them.
I NEVER want to guide another human through school. In fact I'm dedicated to ensuring I can send my grandkids to private schools/

My Philly friend was happy when her grandchildren moved to South Carolina. Her granddaughter wasn't smart enough and was just failing in school. Her class sizes were obscene. She is full on butterfly now. Doing so well in a small school with additional support for her.
We've been lucky to have some good public schools. My son is taking 4 AP classes per his preference. I think he's crazy but he likes that the kids in the AP classes are serious about studying. He's also taking wood shop.
Tuition for some of the colleges he's looking at are scary!
Mornin' All!
busy day today - lots of things to tie up, class this morning, lecture this afternoon, yoga class, meditation class, then dinner with friends. I don't think things are going to slow down for me for awhile....but at least a lot of it is fun stuff!
QOTD: I read all the time, but as far as books go, I don't have one going right now. I always have my nose in newspapers or magazines or reading stuff online.
3 years 4 months out:
B: homemade Greek yogurt, raspberries
MS: coffee with half & half, Miralax/protein peach shake
L: chicken breast/hummus wrap (made with a Flat Out wrap)
AS: might have some high fiber cereal to tie me over, since dinner will be late
D: not sure. Something protein forward, though!
ex: yoga
I am SO glad that you are enjoying retirement. I'm jealous! Remember you really can take a day off though

I agree that windy cold is miserable - the only thing worse is cold, windy and rainy!
It is only two days until our 10 day trip to Oregon and Colorado, so I need to get serious about packing! I did make my packing list, which is the most important item in many ways. This will be a complex packing as we have a wedding to attend in Colorado so we need dress clothes for that.
QOTD: Good one, as I also need a new entertaining book. I am reading a nonfiction book about life taking care of a family member with Alzheimer's. Enlightening, but not entertaining...
Accountability: I was more or less right on with CAMAW, though I did eat spaghetti sauce for dinner last night (cooked by DSD and it was yummy) so there were tomatoes in it. But I didn't have anything else (no pasta, no wine, no bread).
2 Years 6.5 months post-op (maintaining below goal for 22.5 months)
Always lots of coffee...
B: eggs, cottage cheese and Canadian bacon
L: Deli chicken
D: Leftover crab
S: yogurt
