12 1/2 Years Later - 110 lb regain
Thanks everyone! I really appreciate all your responses and they have inspired me to get back to the mindset I was in at the beginning. Yes, when I was planning for the surgery and for those first few years after, I was on a jetstream of motivation and determination. I realize that was my mentality and attitude more than anything.
I will be re-evaluating and getting back to the core principles that worked so well before and changing my lifestyle, with lost of protein, water, movement and support. Those are the keys for sure.
It feels to great to posting here again and hearing all of your stories. Thanks for the bottom of my heart for writing a response.
I'll keep everyone posted on the good news....it will be coming around again.
Thanks,
Rachael
....and thank you for sharing your story. The WLS facility I attended is long-standing. They warned us at pre-WLS class how transfer addictions can easily happen. They warned me I was at high risk for regain due to being super, super morbidly obese (SSMO). Lastly, they seem to treat regain not as failing, rather not yet succeeding. Best Wishes.
It is long - so really if you want to know what works for me.
I am over 10 years post op. I started at 255, went down to ,140, regained a few lbs here and there. And I was able to lose it again by not only restricting my portions and more importantly - reducing carbs to close to nothing. Eating on a schedule again.
App 2 years ago I had issues with eating. Food intolerances, allergies and pain after eating. I even got a norovirus and I dropped more weight. I have a big frame, and at 138- I had very few muscles left, mostly skin, bones and boobs. Body fat % at 15. Very unhealthy for a woman my age. I dealt with all of that and suddenly I was able to eat and drink beer and.... I hired a PT to build muscles. I started gaining and gained good muscles over 4 months with PTrainer. But...I did not stop eating junk food, or drinking. So now I am 25-30 lbs over what I want to be.
First - identify what food or drinks are not good for you and eliminate them from your diet.
Some people go on a semi liquid diet - having 3-4 proteins drink a day with one meal that is limited to some proteins and veggies. It is restrictive, but does not leave space for mistakes. Others try a very low carb diet, moderate fat and proteins, limiting calories at the same time. The dense proteins diet works for some people.
You have to find out what would work for you. Whatever you chose - make sure you stick to it. 110 lbs - on average person can lose 1 lb per week. On average, because one week you may lose 3-4 and stall next 2 weeks.the important thing is to be consistent. Don't give up. Just do what you must, day after day, week after week. Be prepared it may take you 2 years to get to the goal. But - you have the time to get better, right? The closet to goal you get - the slower the weight may be dropping. First 50 lbs - may be faster- you are dedicated, and the motivation is there.
Some people alternate- they pick one Jing for a month, then change.
If you need structure - pick something, and stick to it for a month. Then switch if you get tired of what you are doing.
I am now trying a new thing. Beside everything else I deal with a lot of stress plus fibromyalgia and food intolerances. I am trying to follow autoimmune diet - removing dairy, wheat, and most other grains. And soy, and high fiber foods. It is not easy. But I made 3 butches of thick soup-stew like dishes. Easy to digest, high in good quality protein and some veggies and fat.
My only deviation to keto diet that I plan to start in a week are apples. I needed something to replace snacks and foods that I needed to eliminate. For me - I can't just eliminate foods if i cant have substitution. I clean my diet in steps. Eliminate one or 2 items and replace with something less damaging. I love cheese and bread and... But I had to give that up. So I gave myself permission to eat apples. No more candies, or chips, or other foods like that. I have 2-3 meals that are mostly proteins and some fat and veggies, and use apples as snacks. But next week - no more apples or other fruits beside a couple of servings of berries one day every 1-2 weeks. Right now apples regulate my BM. Help me adjust my diet.
I gave up alcohol, I was becoming dependent on it as a relaxant, after a long stressful day. Plus a thing to help me deal with pain from fibromyalgia. I was delusional thinking that a glass of wine or 2 are harmless.

What I was doing wrong: too many calories. I was eating up to 1900-2000 calories a day and definitely gaining. It took time, but I got myself down to 1300 calories, give or take, and was walking a couple miles at least three times a week. I was able to maintain the lower calories because I was pretty much eating the same thing every day, which is fine with, actually I prefer it. But I spent the summer away at our cottage with extended family nearby, and it really threw off my schedule and menu. Now I'm back at home and slowly getting my calories down and figuring out what I kind of exercise I can manage despite the heat and humidity.
I believe you need to tract every bit of food and drink you take in to your body. Figure out the numbers, where you gain, maintain, or lose. Fit in at least some exercise. You will lose weight! Best of luck!

Hello, we have similar stories. I was 300 when I had surgery, got down to 150 then, after 15 years, I regained 55 pounds. I ended up joining a group gym for women where there were only classes. I also started to eat lots of veggies and healthier foods. It took 2 years but without feeling starved I lost 30 pounds. I want to lose another 10 or so so I can have skin surgery. Don't be hard on yourself. I became an alcoholic and had to put myself through treatment as well. Then 5 years after that I stopped smoking. I also have had infusions until I also had a hysterectomy. Just start eating good, learn new recipes and begin to spend time in the kitchen and take pride in your food. I put a tv in my kitchen and will watch tv while I peel and cut veggies for the week. Make sure you always have veggies and stuff ready to grab when you are hungry. That was the biggest change for me. If you have a crock pot, put a bunch of breast of chicken in there with a million veggies and beans and you can eat off that whenever you are hungry. Eats lots of natural fiber, lots of eggs, salads, veggies, soup, veggie sticks with homemade ranch. Do not give up your fat in your food, if you want to cut down on anything, cut down on your carbs, but don't restrict them so much that you crave them otherwise you will bings. This will all take time. Make the changes, don't weight yourself for a few months. Work out at home if you don't want to join a class. I suggest classes because we tend to work out harder if we are with others lol. Let me know if you want to talk more.
Take care
