Morning all! Foggy, humid and warm here...ugh! I am so ready for the weekend when it is supposed to be sunny! I want to get outside and get in a hike.

Peach, I'm so sorry for all the tragedy in your life. My heart goes out to your son and your friend. Life just isn't always safe and fair!

I had my 6-month Dexa yesterday and I am totally confused about the results. The first real problem is that my body density continues to go down significantly. I am still in the excellent category but it has gone down 2.3 % and then 3.9 % over the last year. That is very worrisome. I have changed to Calcium patches hoping that not having to digest pills would help. I also added in Vitamin K to help with the processing. I have also added in weight training and made sure that I am getting weight bearing exercise. I plan to talk to my PCP about it and see what she suggests. I have a family history of severe osteo and I want to preserve all that I can.

The other strange result is that while my weight is steady, I have lost lean mass and added fat mass and my total body fat percentage has gone up. My doctors felt that my fat percentage had been too low for my age so that isn't all bad, but I don't understand it because I have been doing intense weight training for more than 2 months now. I did have PS about a month after my last Dexa but I don't know how that might have changed the results. I can see the new muscle definition so I know the weight training is getting results. Just confused.

Anyway, another busy day ahead and I'll try to focus on what I can do about things for today.

confusing on your results. but 2 months isnt a super long time to build muscle. you coulld have lost the mass during your PS?

Good point about it being only 2 months of weight training and the fact that I wasn't exercising for about 8 weeks after PS. I am certainly going to stick with working out hard and maybe do another Dexa soon after the first of the year to see if anything has changed. A little disappointing though...

Maybe you lost a bit of muscle mass while recuperating from PS, and are adding it now in different places? Perhaps your physician can help explain the results? That is worrisome about bone density. Mine is borderline and my PCP wanted to wait a year to see if it changed before putting me on meds, so I'm doing my best to avoid that as well. My mother had osteoporosis and broke her hip when she was younger than I am now.

Yes, the 8 weeks not exercising after PS may have caused the loss of the muscle mass. It is disappointing though since I have been working out so hard and I can see the muscle definition and increase in strength even in the 2 months I've been doing weight training.

As far as my bone density, it is still in the excellent category but I am losing it so fast even with supplements and weight bearing exercise that I am really concerned. My grandmother had such brittle bones that her pelvis, vertebrae and other bones would just crumble. At this rate I won't be in the excellent category for long!

It's too soon after such a big surgery.

I wouldn't trust the calcium patches. Are you having trouble getting your calcium citrate down? I've had to change things up over the years. Right now I have BA chocolate chews in my pockets.

yes, i got a reality check when I starting lifting weights- you only gain muscle for women .12-.25 per week.

It means to me it takes a looooong time to change your body composition.

Those are interesting results, it'll be interesting to hear how your PCP feels about it.

I plan to definitely keep working out but hope that my PCP may also put me on something to support my efforts.
