Vitamin refresher course
i have been away from this site for a while. I have been using Patch MD quite successfully for 4 years. But on my last DEXA scan they said there was tiny bone loss in the right femur. This spurred me into action and I have decided to go back to some supplements except I cant remember exactly what we are supposed to take. Calcium Citrate in some combo with D3, iron away from Calcium I think, B12 is always good. Can anyone just send me a small list of the necessities. Calcium, D3, iron, B12 etc. i would be most grateful. Just a precautionary measure. Thanks. Sharon
Patch MD ... do you guys still use these? I have successfully used the multi vitamin patches for several years but they are getting so expensive and I cant find any coupons anymore. Any ideas how NOT to pay $20/month for the patches. Maybe I will have to go back to all those pills. The Patches were so successful for me and my labs are just excellent but the price seems too high. Any suggestions?
Molly
Every clinic is different. Every persons needs and tolerances are different.
early morning... I tried centrum and it made me horribly hungry... so went back to MVI chewable without iron ( i was told to use childrens chewables 3 a day. ) I use meat tenderizer w/o msg on eggs and prteins in morning.for enzyme replacement... then separate from that, later in morning... I use a B complex liquid sublingual.. one cc a day assists in use/ absorbtion of iron..( generic from dollar store or wal mart. This is when I take 2-3( depending on my stomach tolerance). dessicated liver capsules( it has intrinsic factor, which I lack) taken in the morning .. with lunch I take 6-8 probiotic tablets. with pm meal i take 3 probiotic tablets.
Then at night... Definitely calcium in citrate form. I use 1500-2000,) Magnesium in citrate form.(I use 600mg because i fight muscle cramps.) D3 I alternate 5 thousand one day and 10 thousand the next. zinc 50 mg,
I also have added Vitamin K2, new research has come out on it that it moves magnesium and calcium to bones and teeth and away from blood vessels... is a small gel cap, otc, one strength is avail. one a day.@ wally world and is 10$/2 months. My cramps have lessened since began the K2.within the first 7 days cramps lessened.
I have also added sea kelp for iodine in my supplements. Due to large farming practices almost every one in this country is low on iodine. My heart rate had dropped to 40. after I began iodine , aftter about 10 days... it began to return to normal rates...resting pulse is back up to 55 , and ithas ran that for many years/so my normal.
I also avoid aluminum in every form including deoderant/anti steench products and antacids.
Hope these few comments are able to help you in making choices to regain and maintain your health. I am 23 years post a wls, which is no longer done, but included the rny...I have had several side effects.including anemia, loss of most of teeth, had osteopenia beginning until i got on proper forms of magnesium and calcium.(I was taking what was prescribed, but research came out the forms i was taking were not absorbed well.)

Here is a list of the ASMBS requirements, and I've compared them to a standard multi-vitamin for reference:

Thank you so much. I am printing this out for my "book". I was a little low on calcium in the right hip after the dexa scan and that kicked me into re assessing my regiment. All I use is Patch MD and so far my labs are great. But why a little bone loss in the right hip. No one sems to care but me. Typical!
thanks again, Sharon
My center for weight management has updated vitamin guidelines adding an extra Vitamin D dose probably because we live in northern Minnesota where sunshine hours and summer months are short. Because you live south, a friendly suggestion would be to contact a support group meeting facilitator in your area to get an idea the varied, if any, guidelines s/he sees around there. Of course, any area, the doses may depend on each individual's vitamin needs and/or deficiencies.
Thanks for responding. I am also getting back to the support group. It meets the last Tuesday of each month so that is coming up. I had my bone density and the spine, arm and leg were perfect but it showed a small bit of loss in the right hip! We, this kicked me into action. I have had two total knee rplacements the last 2 years and all bones coped well but this tiny loss in the hip surprised me. So it started with me adding more calcium and then snow balled into maybe I need more iron as I feel sliggish at times (or is that just because I am 71) then more b 12 cant hurt cam it? then ... then .... then..... my OCD kicked right in. I have used Patch MD for about 4 years and labs are great. My internist's comment after the July annual physical was "your labs are great" and when I did labs pre op the RN said my labs were better than hers. But you always worry a little after by pass. So just doible down time. Thanks again. Parch MD is so easy. Maybe too easy but it has been holding me in good shale. Just dont like or understand this calcium thing.
