Does raising calories actually facilitate weight loss?

My health tracker said I burned 1973 calories yesterday. Can you imagine if I tried to eat those in addition to the 1200 I actually ate?

I fully intend starting a post one day about being an elite endurance athlete, you know, like Lance Armstrong or Serena, because I'm just like 'em!

I had to disable the exercise counting calories in MFP. It was very distracting, being informed I could add 793 calories in food for the one hour of water aerobics.

in my opinion it is about numbers... you need to be running a deficit to lose pounds- some people underestimate food intake and overestimate calories burned or for that matter try to eat back the calories.

also I've found that actually weighing food can be a HUGE reality check. even on dry foods like protein powder, PEANUT butter, etc

My bariatric therapist (who manages a weight loss clinic as part of his practice) calls BS too on this based on the research. Pure and simple - focus on your targets (protein, fat, carbs) and be done with it. If you aren't getting in your protein and water - eating more carbs isn't going to trigger weight loss. This is just one of those myths that needs to be busted. The concept of cyclical calories to "trick" the body into shedding weight by thinking it's not starving anymore. Just weigh, measure, count and track and hit your protein/water goals and keep the carbs below your desired level (whether that is 30 or 50....). Go for it!!!

This is about healthy so the biggest thing, especially early out when it's difficult to eat a lot is getting your protein in.

60-80g is the minimum per day, many people aim for 100g to optimize weight loss.

It is a scam started by personal trainers. When their clients were not losing, they did not want to hear that they were eating too much. So they told them they were in starvation mode and they needed to eat more. It works for the trainers and helps them to make more money from their clients.

Hello everybody!

I've never been able to get a clear answer on this one. Some people swear that you can facilitate additional weight loss by adding in some extra calories. The explanation I usually hear behind this claim is that eating as low calorie as a lot of us do puts our bodies into "starvation mode" and we hang onto the fat for survival. Others say that that explanation is unreasonable, that the fewer calories you eat, the faster you lose weight because you are burning more calories than you are consuming.

The second explanation makes more sense to me, but being as determined as I am to lose as much weight as fast as possible, I would prefer to have a clearer answer on this subject to make as informed decision as I can regarding my calorie choices.

Thanks all!

starvation mode is bunk. Eating less calories than the body needs to run itself is what causes weight loss.

If we eat very low calorie,600-800 cals, our bodies start to break down our stored fat to use for energy. Breaking down stored fat causes weight loss. If we are eating too many calories our body has enough to work with and it won't burn the stored fat.

ppl who have anorexia nervous a are a perfect example. They eat so little that their body burns virtually ALL their body fat. That is why they look like skeletons, because they actually are skeletons with skin draped on it.

If starvation mode was a thing, there would be no such thing as anorexia nervous cause the body would stop burning itself up for energy. Clearly, anorexia nervous DOES exist and that busts the myth of starvation mode.

Eat 600-800 call get all your water and stay the course. You will get there. You can't game the system of the body.
