I never took anything pre-op-- we don't have malabsorption beforehand . (Vitamin D was prescribed since I was deficient.)

i was instructed to not start vitamins until a week or two post op.

I did take a multi and D pre-op, but not specifically to prep for surgery, it's just what I was already doing anyway. I was instructed to start chewable vitamins 2 weeks post-op.

I was already taking a multi and B12 when I started the process for my surgery. I don't see any harm in you taking vitamins, but I'd ask my surgeon to be sure.

I started taking my post-WLS vitamins two months before surgery for two reasons:

  1. obese people are often mal-nurished and deficient in many things -- as counterintuitive as that may be.
  2. I wanted to establish the habit before it was necessary so that I had one less major change to worry about in the midst of massive others.

Do your medications have to all be taken at one time or could you move some around to space them out more evenly? I was/am able to take my pills with a small sip of water. I had to break some of the larger medications up to about the size of a skittle with a pill cutter and sometimes it takes more than one small sip but I just practiced at it and it gets easier for me. I am so grateful after not being able to swallow correctly and having issues with medications, vitamins, etc.

Which leads me to this - If I had the choice and forethought I would have taken my bariatric vitamins prior to my first surgery in 2017. Absolutely. Without a doubt. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. So many post op bariatrics end up trying to play catch up down the road and the previous poster who noted many morbidly obese patients are already deficient going in is correct. Be wise.

Creating a new routine has worked for me to help me with compliance with vitamins, fluids and protein, etc. Some people set alarms on their phone or have other timers. Do whatever helps you. I wish you success in creating a healthier you. We are all still learning

Kat had great advice above. Its what I did before surgery.

Have you had lab work done? Getting things in the upper part of their ranges before surgery will make things easier afterward. I wouldn't want to go into surgery deficient, or even low in anything.
