Hello everyone,

My surgery day is soon approaching and instead of feeling excited, as I was before getting my surgery date, I feel very stressed. It seems that I can't control it!

What do you do to relax?

I can't speak for everyone but I think it's pretty common to be nervous as you approach a major surgery. I just tried to stay as busy as possible, make sure I stayed on track with my requirements and planned to make it as easy for myself once I got home (cleaned all the crap out of the pantry/fridge, made sure I had my first week's worth of gatorade (my plan was one week of nothing but gatorade), had liquid tylenol, etc.

Good luck; 4 days will go fast!

I had a half dozen surgeries, mostly MO-related, before my doctor said to either plan for WLS or plan my funeral. I did both. I thought taking the plunge to start the WLS process was pretty stressful in itself. An unexpected sense of relief was the result from completing a pre-funeral planning packet ahead of time. Although past surgeries helped lessen my fear of what could go wrong on the surgery table, fear of failure, fear of the unknown, and fear of letting go my way of coping in life made the word "stressed" turn into "terrified." I still am not sure if I was either calm or numb the morning of WLS. I found comfort in knowing I did all I could to prepare for this life-changing step: shed some pre-surgery weight, exercised often, researched WLS, organized the house, thanked my family, and assured myself I was doing the right thing.

Kind of a relaxing pre-WLS idea you might consider doing: it was suggested to write down three things: 1) how MO has affected your life 2) why you have chosen to have WLS 3) what your hopes, dreams, and goals are for the future. Save this writing to read on your one-year surgiversary.
