Metformin

Prior to weight loss surgery I was on metformin for diabetes..... right after surgery I quit. I recently told my doc about my weighgain concerns and she stated that I had a 5.1 A1c and put me back on metformin. I thought that A1c was good, but I guess I'm wrong. Is metformin a weight loss pill too because that's what I jokingly asked for. I will take it but I have so many questions to ask her.

I've been on Metformin for about 7 or 8 years. You would have to prise it out of my cold dead hands. My current A1c is 5.5 on metformin and I am a normal weight now, having lost regain this year.

It's commonly used as an appetite suppressant - my 15 year old has been on it for 2 years and he has a normal A1c (he has severe autism and food seeks)

I thought so..... I do see a difference in my appetite. My doc doesn't necessarily believe in weight loss drugs. I tried to google it and saw on a PCOS board that women use it for that reason. I hope I come back down with of course watching what I put in my mouth. I've started cutting out carbs..... etc. my BMI is back to normal at 24.8, but my weight loss is creeping along...... I will keep trying at it.

If you don't mind me asking, is it just the weight loss for PCOS or is it for other symptoms too? I want to understand.

One symptom of PCOS is insulin resistance, and metformin helps the body better utilize your natural insulin. That's why it's typically prescribed for diabetics but it's also given to people with PCOS who might be insulin resistant, if not completely diabetic. The weight loss aid is just a nifty side effect. In my case, it was because my food came right back out the other end!

I have gained a bit of weight the past year and wondering if I'm having insulin issues or whether im just eating too many calories. will mention to my gyno when I go back.

I don't want to go super low on calories because that also causes issues.

There's also a school of thought now to treat pre-diabetes with metformin even though at one time they might not have done anything.
