Mini Gastric Bypass on 06/26/18

Name's Mike and I had gastric bypass surgery a month ago. Not sure how much I've lost as I haven't been weighed in about three months but I'm going to see my regular doctor (not the surgeon) tomorrow and they'll probably tell me then.

Been a wee bit concerned as it seems lately I've been experiencing more and more chest pains after I eat than usual. I dunno if it's still normal at this point in the surgery or certain foods that trigger it, or if I'm eating too fast or what. Usually it passes within a half hour or so but sometimes it seems to occur when I've just had a little bit of water to drink.

I hope I'm not experiencing a partial stomach blockage or something. I've tried a few foods that I found out later they recommend NOT eating my current phase because they're "difficult to digest".

Anyway, i dunno, just wanted to see what you guys think.

Welcome Mike. Good luck on the weigh in.

If you are having pains, you need to back off. Obviously, don't eat foods you havent been cleared for. You could do some serious damage. But eating anything too much, or too fast, will cause some serious pain as well. And with your new stomach, just one extra bite can be too much.

Hopefully you're weighing your portions to avoid excess. Please, pay attention to the signs.

Hi Mike,

Welcome to the forum. I had a revision from the gastric sleeve to bypass (for medical reasons) a month ago (roughly, now). I would add to whatever else advice you may get, go SLOW. Remember to chew until liquid and pause between bites and try to tune in as you eat to what your body is feeling. If you wear a heart rate monitor like a FitBit, you can even check that while you eat (I do!). Follow your program guidelines. Let us know what your Dr says after you see them and you share your symptoms. If you are having pain after drinking and eating it could come from a number of things but I wonder if your Dr might check for a stricture. Are you getting your fluids in enough to hit your daily goals like hydration, protein, etc?

Chest pains may be due to taking too big a sip of fluids; think TINY sips for a long time. As well, tiny bites, chewed very very well, and limit overall quantity of food. Your nerves were probably cut during surgery so you may not feel much restriction for awhile, thus making it easier to overeat. Instead, measure your food, don't seek a feeling of fullness, and back off on foods that may cause discomfort right now. Don't be in a hurry to advance your diet.

Are you drinking with your food? Many of us were advised to not drink 1/2 hour before, during or 1/2 hour after eating in the beginning (revising to no drinking during and for 1/2 hour after once fully healed).

Oh, I forgot to mention, during the surgery, I also had my gallbladder removed. It wasn't bothering me physically, but they said it had stones so I assume it would have given me problems sooner or later. I suppose that might also be part of the reason I'm going through some of the things I've been through.

Someone asked if I was getting enough fluids and protein during the day. Fluids I think I'm okay on, but protein I'm not sure. When I started I was mainly drinking protein drinks with 30g per container, but lately I've been trying to find alternate sources as the drinks just... I dunno.. they just don't taste great anymore (maybe I'm just burned out on them after weeks.) Still, I try to down at least one or two a day.

Anyway, thanks for all the tips and stuff, I think maybe I had been going a bit too fast with my chewing and stuff, so I've been slowing down a bit.
