Swallowed gum 48 hours pre-op

My daughter gave me a piece of sugarless gum that I accidentally swallowed. My RNY surgery is on August 22 and I am so afraid they may make me cancel. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

This too shall pass.

Let your surgeon know as soon as you can. Keeping it to yourself us unwise.

Hi Boobus, curious to know if you were warned about pre-op gum (I was not) or if it is your own worry? I also wondered why you mentioned your daughter instead of just saying you accidentally swallowed gum? Anyway, here is what I would do if I was nervous about swallowed pre-op gum: 1. drink, drink, drink a lot of water, hot tea, and Coke (Coke is claimed to dissolve battery acid!) 2. confer with the surgery team to ease concern, if anything 3. count this worry as a lesson learned to not risk another gum accident for at least the first few months of post-op healing. Well Wishes to You August 22nd.

Poor advice to tell OP to drink Coke right before surgery as the soda could cause a worse issue than the gum and is probably not on her pre-op plan. Nor was it necessary to chide her about mentioning her daughter when she shared what had happened. She was just providing details, which for some reason you decided to criticize her about. Sad.

OP: Just call your surgeon's office and get their medical guidance on the situation. I would be surprised if it impacts your surgery this week but I wouldn't know since I'm not an MD. I am curious to hear what they have to say about it. Good luck!

I did not give advice. What I did do was state three things I would do (note #2 being call the surgery team). My husband has success using Coke to clean his battery terminals and as a tenderizer for tough grilling meat. I would still try Coke as a gum-dissolver despite your criticism "soda could cause a worse issue". I have heard a WLS professional suggest Coke to help breakdown and unlodge stuck meat. Boobus can choose to ignore, dismiss, or followup to replies. I stand by everything I posted hoping Boobus will sense help more than criticism. If not, I apologize and again send Well Wishes on August 22nd.

There are a lot of crazy claims made for Coke, such as removing rust. None of them are true.
