Do I have a crappy NUT?

So I had my surgery on 7/27/2018 (RNY) and here is the diet my surgeon and NUT put me on:

  • Days 1-2 (in the hospital): clear liquids
  • Week 1: full liquids, applesauce, yogurt
  • Weeks 2 - 3: Purees AND soft foods
  • Week 4: My sample meal plan includes all types of meat, pasta, breads, veggie burgers, and other stuff I never thought I could eat so quickly.

What are better restrictions/limits to follow? I just called and scheduled an appointment for September with a new NUT at a different hospital. I met her a couple years ago in a nutrition class and she came off as very strict, but someone *****ally cared about long-term results and success from the tool.

So far, I can't tolerate mashed potatoes, cow's milk, canned tuna, sugar-free pudding, lemon flavored things, or meatballs. But I've responded well to boiled sweet potato, raw cashews (chewed very well), sautéed tofu, whole wheat crackers (I can only eat 2 in one sitting), strawberry applesauce, fish, and occasional pieces of chicken.

Any suggestions or advice would be helpful; thanks so much in advance! Food is so unappealing right now, but I am eagerly waiting for the six month mark so I can experiment with some sushi and sashimi -I really loved it pre-op.

Yup. That's a really crappy eating plan.

Pasta, bread, applesauce, crackers, mashed potatoes should be off your eating plan until you have passed your weight goal. Preferably forever. They are nothing but empty calories, and the goal here is to burn calories, not eat them.

You do need protein, for a variety of things. And a little fat. A good rule of thumb while you are trying to lose weight is that every 100 calories you eat should have a minimum of 10 grams of protein. If it doesn't pass that test, don't eat it.

You really want to maximize your weight loss in these early months. Every pound you don't lose now is just going to be harder to lose later on.

Good Afternoon. I am not quite a vet (I am just over 4 years out) but wanted to share some of the things that worked for me at that stage. If you haven't seen the blog/website for eggface check her out, she gives tons of ideas/recipes for different phases (ricotta bake is a popular and YUMMY one). I could not handle mashed white potatoes (I got really light-headed and felt weird) but could do mashed sweet potato okay, I did refried beans, plain greek yogurt (I would add in some SF pudding powder sometimes), Light and fit greek yogurt, cottage cheese, scrambled eggs with melted cheese early out. I could not do the pre-made SF pudding (my body does not like the sugar alcohols). I would stay away from the crackers and apple sauce at this point as they aren't providing you with the protein you need. Biggest advice is to make sure you're getting in your water (of course not close to your meal times.) Best of luck and take care.

I got very very fatigued very quickly after trying white potatoes. I can do well with sweet potatoes. I thin out tuna with either greek yogurt and/or avocado. I can handle moist meats and some nuts but I have to chew very very well and go slowly. Think of food as fuel for your goals as you make your menu. I have learned some things make me feel better but some make me feel much worse. I am trying to stabilize my weight and gain a few pounds for medical reasons; however, once I do that I will adjust my menu accordingly. If you are trying to lose weight I think your bariatric NUT is not a very good one but every program is different. Just because we CAN doesn't mean we SHOULD. One has to look at a patient's overall health goals and it sounds like her advice doesn't sit well with you. Be your own advocate and I hope you can find a better NUT. I am waiting for an appoint with a NUT later this month but I realize it i**** or miss even in the bariatric community. I have learned a lot from other successful bariatric patients (those who are longer term farther out), but ultimately we have to look honestly at our own situation and if a situation doesn't seem right it probably isn't. Are you tracking your food and fluids? How are you doing with the basics like hydration, protein from food, etc? (aside from her other suggestions)
