Taking NSAIDS?
I received similar advice from my surgeon. I wouldn't make it a habit but if i have a bad toothache or headache I'll occasionally mix a coated ibuprofen in with the very lame Tylenol I usually take.
He also gave me the thumbs up for pepto bismol which I sometimes use but very sparingly.
My own surgeon told me that there are times an NSAID is just the most practical and safest option based on the condition--not severe enough to warrant something stronger, etc. In those cases he's ok with very spare use of NSAIDs, but would rather not have us use them if the pain is tolerable. So I suppose like stated above, you'll have to weigh the risk yourself.

That's a tough call. Did the UC doc mention how long you would need to do it for? Would a topical anti inflammatory cream like voltaren help (and although still an absorbed nsaid, be less risky)? Good luck with your decisoning - I hate that you're caught between the guidelines and recommendations!

As others said, risk vs reward - if I was having a heart attack, I'd take an aspirin. But if it was just pain or inflammation, I wouldn't even remotely consider it.
I had an ulcer 3 years ago, without ever touching an NSAID. I lost 6 or 7 units of blood. No pain or inflammation is worth that risk.

I had my first routine colonoscopy done this past Aug. 2. Upon checking in with the nurse and then the Anesthesiologist I strongly stressed when asking allergies etc. that I can not have any NSAIDS. They noted etc. put my IV in and I am rolled into procedure room put on heart monitors, oxygen doctor steps up says ok have a good sleep .... anesthesiologist has syringe at my IV says I know you said no NSAIDS I am giving you propofol it is fine will go no where near your stomach. I was a bit intimidated but after I googled and it was indeed a NSAIDS ! Amazing they did not listen or that they were strictly ignorant to the systematic idea of a NSAID to a WLS patient.
(Edited to fix the spelling I had on NSAIDS!! )
Th ignorance is a bliss in a medical community. Every time I had to correct - insist on "no NSAIDS" it gets me more and more aware that we are the best advocates for us.
U am currently on Rx PPI - the "last resort" PPI for anyone (as i was told) and i had enough issues over the years to risk any NSAIDs - except for having a heart attack.

I should have said something but it was right as needle was next to IV 2 nurses and 2 male doctor s and I was intimidated and I didn't say if what you are giving me is a NSAIDS I want something else. Aggressive behavior by doctor and I punked out I guess you could say. Just surprised they waited to critical moment to tell me that.
My gastro did my Colonoscopy last time and I was a control freak. So was he. Plus he deals with my messed up guts and he knows we "can't afford" even a small mistake. I am currently on $190 per month Rx PPI. Every 6 months he has to call my insurance to make them approve it. Plus I already have Barrett esophagus. Last time we checked - it was "only" 2%, but I am sure it got bigger since then.
I was put on the Rx PPI it after my back surgery- and I am sure they gave me something they were not suppose to. But I learned as I went.
During my last hernia surgery, my BF did not have to ask them what bed I was in- he heard me "giving orders to the docs...". I am sure after my "instructions" they realized I was really stressed out and decide to give me something, because giving a kiss to my guy when she showed up by the bed is the last thing I remember. lol... They just knocked me out... BTW: I was really "babied" and take care of pre- and post op. Great team. And I don't think they got upset about my control freak episode. I am sure they've seen it worse.

I was told if I ever needed to take an NSAID I should be taking a PPI.
I find muscle relaxant helpful sort of an indirect pain reliever- relaxes everything around it.
