-1.5 pounds/week is a pretty good rate for someone that far out from surgery. We will not lose at the same rate we did right after surgery. My goal is usually a pound a week.

It is just going to take time. Patience, grasshopper!!

Has anyone else had these issues ??? I could use some advice and direction PLEASE ...

Long story, but I need some help! I had the surgery at 42. I am now 58. I was a "success story" I have been able to keep most of the weight off, my lowest was 142 lbs, and I've been around 160/170 lbs for 16 plus years. Until THIS year! I was diagnosed with Hypothyriodism after seeing at least 6 doctors and after several hospital ER visits. To say I am upset is an understatement. Because of the UNDER active thyriod being misdiagnosed for 7 months I've gained 40 plus lbs. I AM MISERABLE! feel so defeated. I have gone to a nutritionist and have lost 6lbs (took almost 4 weeks), but I think my hormones and my body is such a mess I am not sure what to do.. the doctors have suggested revision surgery or diet pills, but I dont have a volume of food or a quality of food issue. I literally changed my entire way of life post op. Now, I feel like I have no control over this weight gain.. My thyriod levels are back in the normal range as of 3 weeks ago. Is it just going to take more time? Is malabsorption preventing my body from absorbing the medicine (Synthriod)?? I also have sleep issues as the RNY impacts serotonin production as well. I am a mess! If there are any doctors or post op patients that can help me I would greatly appreciate it.

couple of things:

malabsorption does affect absorption. I currently take 200mcg a day, which is three times the dosage that would be required for someone my size that did not have malabsorption, according to my endo. He says we have to dose by my labs and not my size. If that is the amount it takes, that is the amount it takes.

never take genetic thyroid supplement. Always insist on synthesis, even if you have to self pay.

It must be taken at least four hours away from any other medication, food or drink and should be taken in the morning.

I take mine st 3,4,5 o'clock in the mornings, what ever tome I wale to turn or got to pee.

hypothyrodism is not a result of WLS. Many ppl who have never had WLS develop it. It was on your genes to develop it no matter what you did.

It does take time to regulate so don't panic, that is not doing any good. It is a matter of doing labs regularly and sdjusying regularly as needed. Many of us live healthy lives with hypothyroidism.

As far as the weight gain, make sure you are strictly on plan or drop by 500 cals a day and you will lose it. Drop all carbs until you lose it.

Hi Cindy,

Sorry to hear all you are going through. You are lucky you are in the NY area. We have had many members post about issues like this and one of the surgeons that specializes in issues like this is Dr. Garber. Give his office a call And see if they can help?

Thank you Kathy! Dr Garber was actually my surgeon 16 years ago. I might try to contact him. Although I am not sure how he could help considering I don't need revision surgery. I wasnt aware he treated malabsorption and Thyriod issues. I'll check his web site (I am actually still on the front page as a success story) so depressing considering what I've been through this year..

Ok Kathy. Thank you. I just discussed this again with my Endo. I am going to work on stabilizing the thyroid while seeing a nutritionist . Then once stabilized I will seek other help if I am not in good shape. I am also going to call Dr Garber about an upper endoscopy. I am having pain near the surgery site so maybe I have a small ulcer. I had one years ago because I took Alleve.. I'll keep trying I cant take being this big. Its so defeating!!

I appreciate all of your help

Thank you

Cindy
