Pregnancy after RNY
We just had our first baby on August 8th, so please forgive the postpartum sleep deprived brain fog ;)
In terms of diet you don't have to change a lot unless your bloodwork calls for it. In the second trimester we were told to add 200-300 calories a day and 500 (from your base) in the third trimester. I gained a bit more than recommended and I haven't weighed myself since giving birth, but everyone says I look like I did before I got pregnant. I expect I will have about 20 pounds to lose to be happy but it will depend on how breastfeeding goes.
My pregnancy was awesome and I was lucky to be quite comfortable until the last couple weeks. The one major issue I had during the pregnancy was an ulcer in my pouch which was caused by vomiting from a stomach virus my DH brought home from work. I was carefully monitored throughout the pregnancy and didn't end up having any "high risk" issues. Baby is perfectly average in size - 7 lbs and 19 inches which I consider a miracle given my family tends to have big babies.
I have taken my vitamins religiously since surgery (I'm three years post-op) and had really good blood work values. My iron dropped during the pregnancy so the doctor prescribed adding two Feramax iron doses per day. I get my blood work redrawn in a couple weeks to see how I have recovered and if we need to make any more changes.
I started with a midwife but was transferred to an OB when I developed the ulcer. Towards the end she had me going for weekly ultrasounds to monitor growth and the typical pregnancy check list (BPP). I did blood work every six weeks. Ultrasounds every 1-2 weeks. Because we can't do the glucose sensitivity test (you drink 50 grams of sugar water) I tested my blood sugar four times a day from 24 weeks onward to monitor for gestational diabetes.
I have to go feed baby now but if you have any specific questions you can reply or PM me :) I hope this all made sense and wasn't more confusing lol.
Your baby shares my birthday!

Congrats!!! Is there a reason you waited 3 years to have a kid or is that just how it worked out??? I never thought about the glucose test! Was your ob familiar with pregnancy after weight loss surgery????? How much did you gain overall by the end of your pregnancy?

We got married last year in June and I am a grad student. I decided to take a leave of absence last year and DH had settled into a new job. It was just a good time and I didn't want to wait too much longer since I was 32 at the time. Physically I definitely could have carried sooner but financially it wouldn't have been as good. We didn't know how long it would take to get pregnant either -- DH was a lot more optimistic than me lol.
My OB ended up being extremely knowledgeable about bariatric surgery but that was more by accident because I had started in midwifery care and was transferred to her - she happened to be the OB on call at the hospital the night I went in for the ulcer.
I believe I gained just shy of 30 pounds over the whole pregnancy, however I lost 10 pounds from the stomach virus and 5 pounds because of the ulcer.
