What's on your Thursday Menu, RNYers?
Thanks. My current position does have advantages, like freedom to work (relatively) flexible hours, go to lunch when I want, few meetings, no one else to be responsible for, etc. And because I have been here so long, the promotion wouldn't have meant a raise anyway. I'm just try to not let it make me too crazy!

this is the main reason I never wanted to pursue a higher-level position in the place I just retired from. There was a time about 10 years ago when I was made an interim supervisor of one of our units because someone left, and I'm sure they felt I'd be ecstatic about it, but I actually wanted to die when I heard. I had zero interest in doing things like supervising people, dealing with budgets, having more meetings, having to work longer hours, etc. I did not apply for the permanent position once it opened - I wanted to go back to my old job. In the years before I retired, I only had to worry about what I was doing - not what everyone else was doing, too. Plus I had a lot of flexibility. I often worked from home or from coffee shops when I didn't have meetings or desk shifts and had stuff I could do online from anywhere - which I often did. No way I could do that if I was a unit head. So I never even tried to move up the ladder. And plus if you weren't going to get a decent raise out of it (or a raise at all, in your case)...ugh. Although I know it's still got to be really disappointing.

Wait - no raise, way more responsibility, loss of some great freedoms and you went for it? Props to you Janet! I don't know that I would have done the same. Don't let it make you crazy - sounds like you may have the better deal after all!

While it would be no raise to move to the next level, the problem is that I am one step from the top of my current grade, which means no where else to go. Oh, well, certainly other advantages like I can telework 2 days a week in this position and only with prior approval in a management position. That certainly means alot!

P.S. since that one person encouraged you to apply, I suspect he wanted you in that position. It's likely that the committee didn't come to consensus on the final decision. Happens a lot. I know I was on one committee and some of us *loved* this one candidate, but others liked another one better. The other one ended up getting hired. So I wouldn't necessarily take it as you were deceived. There may have been disagreement on the committee on which candidate to hire...and some people might have wanted someone from the outside.

Janet, that simply sucks. I would be livid! There may be another excellent opening coming down the pike which is genuine, not just for show - fingers crossed! Regardless, they are lucky to have you! I know it was unfair, but it sounds as if it was not at all a personal evaluation. Grrrr! I hate workplace politics too. Hang in there!

If anyone can commiserate about job interview processes, it's me! Sorry that it was such a bad experience... :(
JB, talked to DW, who is an IT geek, and she says that she didn't like the Surface because it runs more like a tablet than a laptop. Not all of the programs that are needed on the job were fully functional.
She loves the MacBook Air and wants one. She does say that while Microsoft products will run on a Mac, they don't always format the same when you are sharing documents.
Just 2 cents from our house.

Thanks, that is helpful. I am most worried about navigating Excel, which I recall is pretty different on the Mac. I have to navigate a budget document that is pretty intense and I don't want to mess around with the functions and stuff. Ahh, I wish this was an easier decision.
