Hi Everyone, I'm Neenee and I'm new to the forum. I had the RnY procedure a little more than 2 weeks ago and I'm surprised and learning from both the struggles and victories that come with the process. I think my biggest struggle right now is drinking enough water...How are folks doing getting those 64oz a day? Honestly, I'm looking forward to getting the okay to drink with a straw. I think it'll help me alot.

Hi! Welcome to the group! Check out the daily "what's on your menu" thread, it's a great place to meet people and see what we're all eating at different stages and get ideas. Even if you're still just on liquids, you can chime in!

getting all the fluids in was hard at first. Sometimes just few sips makes you feel full. I personally had an easier time with warm and hot liquids and drank a lot of caffeine free herbal teas and decaf coffee with Premier Protein added as creamer. SF popsicles and SF Jell-O also count as fluids, and so do your protein drinks. Try experimenting with different temperature liquids.

Welcome NeeNee. The first few weeks are tough and it takes time to get used to your new pouch, how much it fits, how it gurgles, and navigating life without food as a coping mechanism for being bored, lonely, etc. But it gets better and better! Right now your job is to stay hydrated. Sip protein shakes and experiment with flavors. The Syntrax brand sells a sample pack. Some people like the RTD ones (ready to drink) like Premier Protein, others prefer mixing/shaking them up themselves. Try flavored water, like adding Crystal Light to water (no calorie additives only, of course). Try it ice cold. Try decaf herbal tea, both hot and warm. See what temps and flavors you like right now. This will change over time, but just be sure you get at least 64 ounces of fluids. What is your surgeon's meal plan for you? Are you on liquids only? You can have sugar-free popsicles which also count as fluids.

Some people can't tolerate drinking with a straw but I do everyday (granted I am almost 5 years out) and it's not a problem.

Just stay slow and steady, cut out the crap that so many WLS surgeons recommend that are full of carbs (you do NOT need applesauce, mashed potatoes and oatmeal...you need protein and hydration) and wait for your entire life to change for the better!

I am a week out and what I do is have a goal of drinking a bottle of water in he morning one in the afternoon and one in the evening. I also drink a protein shake mid morning and mid afternoon. My Center has told me not to ever drink with a straw again as it brings in too much air into the stomach. Wierd how there seems to be so many different guidelines depending where you go.

Good luck

Welcome...

Yes the water is hard, in the beginning I counted all fluids towards my 64oz.

I literally paced myself mentally and gave myself ounces to complete. Bottle of water on the nightstand so I started drinking as soon as I woke up...

Read old posts in the beginning I found that very helpful when I first came.

Using a straw helps me. I feel when I don't have one I get more gassy from it.

As your edema from the surgery subsides, it will be easier to get your liquids and protein in. Don't push too hard, pay attention to your tool., your pouch.., don't over fill it. ...follow your Doctors orders to a T.

Thank you everyone for your kindness. I have become more comfortable drinking, and have been enjoying my week 3 meals of mainly tuna fish and canned salmon, lol. I am looking forward to the start of week 4 (tomorrow) where I can start eating cooked veggies. I'm finally reaching my liquid intake goals but my weightloss seems to have stalled. I measure everything out and dong am probably taking in no more than 350-400 calories a day, if that, should I be concerned?
