Thanks. The really difficult part of the decision is that my chief, who was also on the interview panel, asked me to apply for the job and gave me pointers with the process.

Hey Janet....it might be that you are doing so well with you developing who you really are or who you really want to be...using your time for exercising, eating the way you need to...Really taking the time for YOU.. maybe that's more than enough for now...just you deciding what's really important to you...your health...what I'm trying to say is really focus on what you have accomplished so far and be proud...(and keep doing!)...not getting a promotion at this time - try using it as a learning thing... find out what you might need to change/add/ignore and be kind to yourself...you have already accomplished so much!!!

Thanks for the encouragement. Getting healthier has definitely given me the confidence to apply in the first place, so it is disappointing not to get it.

On the positive side is that I will get to keep more of my telework and my schedule will be more flexible for walking or going to the gym at lunch. Also, far less meetings than being in management!

I'm so sorry you didn't get the position. I serve on our hiring management team on the county government level and I would highly encourage you to talk to someone about the choice for feedback. I know it takes a lot of courage, but there is often more to the choice than you know. If they are anything like me, they will be honest and supportive.

Thanks! I won't be back in the office until Tuesday, I'm teleworking, but I left a message for our chief to see if I can meet with him to discuss it. I don't know how much he can say, but since he is the one who encouraged me to apply in the first place, I hope he can give me more insight.

I work in the Copyright Office at the Library of Congress--legislative branch, fortunately! I've been there for almost 16 years.

that can be really tough when you're an internal candidate. That happened to me once as well and I was really bitter about it for a long time. I'm so sorry that happened to you.

I'm so sorry - you really stepped up to apply for it only to be disappointed (and surprised). I've been there (and DD recently) - it doesn't feel good. Probably the best thing is to focus on the positive things so many co-workers said to you when you were considering it. They have the true insight. During one of the times that it happened to me, the winning applicant had less relevant experience in the most important aspect bur more in another less important area AND he just interviewed well. He was in the job for 2 years and failed miserably ultimately being demoted back to his former grade. I didn't even consider applying for it at that point.
