Hello all,

I searched for some post regarding regaining weight after 5 years and I havent seen anything that was recent. I have regained most of my weight back and I need some help or ideas getting it back off. I have visited my surgeon and everything is still in tact. I am just discouraged and cant seem to get it together. Any positive help would be appreciated.

I'm sure someone will be along and make a back to basics response, but that's pretty much what you have to do. It's good that you verified with your surgeon that all is well inside, so now the rest is up to you.

I would suggest getting some sort of intake tracker. I use Lose It! on my phone and for the first few days, don't change anything. Just go about your normal business, but log everything you eat or drink. I'm sure you'll find it very eye-opening and you'll start to see patterns and things that you probably ate that were a lot of calories but maybe didn't really enjoy. Also be aware if you're falling back into the eating while bored habit or eating because an SO is hungry but you're not. If you're drinking alcohol, stop. Alcohol is number one for weight gain.

Once you've assessed what you're eating and identified easy cuts, go back to basics. Measured amounts of dense protein and minimal carbs. No drinking until 30-60 minutes after eating, no caloric drinks (bye bye Frappuccino!) and plenty of non-caloric fluids. Thank goodness you're not trying to fill a football-sized stomach--just a little egg--so you have a huge advantage over a regular person. Before you know it, you'll be back to losing weight!

My surgery was 10 years ago yesterday. One thing they didn't tell me was it is normal to regain 20% of the weight loss after a period of time. I did regain 14 lbs. over the last year and have taken off most of that.

Jen gave you excellent advice. My problem was grazing. Even though I was eating healthy, I was consuming too many calories. For me, carbs are the worst for me. Avoiding carbs is my best chance for avoiding weight gain.

Good luck!

Well you came here that's a good step. The head part after surgery is the hardest part. Bad habits can creep back into our lives very easily.

I am 10 years post op. A had a some regain over the years. 10-20 lbs.

I lost that - working hard on my diet, moderate exercise and alcohol.

During last 12 months I gained 30 lbs. 10 was on purpose, I got sick and lost too much - specially muscles. I wanted to gain 10-15, but once j started - I ended up being 20 lbs too heavy.

But once the body is used to carbs and snacks - it took me time to reset, remove most carbs from my diet, and last week I was starting to reduce calories intake.

I saw 1 lb loss. 19 more to go. I know it would take time. PriProba 5-6 months. But I know i am too heavy for my back and knees.

First week decarbing was tough. I reduced most carbs and concentrate on proteins and fats, with some non starchy veggies. I made sure I had lots of different meats available to snack on. But after one week, I no longer feel like I am starving. Plus going low carbs allow me to get more sensitive to signals that I am full.

So this week - I limit portion and calories. I decided on 4 smaller meals, plus one small snack.

Last weekend I made pork loin roast, grilled chicken, thick chicken soup with veggies (more like a stew) , and Thai style ginger chicken with veggies. I also have GB eggs, cold cuts, and i made taco meat, that I eat as a topping on my green veggies.

I have avocado plus olives to make sure I get enough fat, plus low carbs veggies - pickles (wit h no sugar added) cucumbers, zucchini, yellow squash, etc etc.

I just finished lunch of 3 chicken tenderloins, 2 pickles, few olives and a 1/2 small avocado. I am stuffed.

My exercise - housework plus walking, and some workouts with weights. But nothing really very time consuming.

I have a 17 lbs cat, just picking him up from the floor is weight lifting. And he doesn't mind being handled. He is a sweetheart.

If losing the regain is important- make a realistic plan, and stick to it. Expect slow loss, but don't get discouraged when you see stalls. They most likely would happen. Plugging along, and following good eating plan should get you were you want to be weight Wise.

Good summary of why regains happen and how to re adjust...to get loss restarted.. Hang in there. You can get back to whre you need to be.

I don't doubt about that.

The biggest challenge for me is to stop losing when I get where I need to be. A few times I flew by the goal and dropped additional 10-15 lbs. Losing weight can be rewarding- like a high.

I was telling myself that I needed to lose 5 lbs "as a buffer" then another 5 lbs as a buffer for my buffer. And before I knew it - I was 15 below my own goal.

With my good pouch, eating keto often makes me full - not hungry after a few bites. Or I get busy and forget to eat, or it is too hot and I rather have a cold water...

I am still learning about balance. Thin but not too thin. Muscular but not too muscular. Ever fine line.

The only reason I want to lose the 10-15 lbs is for my back and knees. They hurt less when there is "less of me" . But - when it is less of me - my butt hurts. I usually end up with a really bony ass. Even when I exercise - I build leg muscles , but not a butt.

How are you doing?
