Iron Deficiency Anemia
It certainly isn't usual since we don't absorb our vitamins as well post-op. It is my understand that most of our iron is absorbed in the duodenum and we don't have that any more. That is why it is so important to keep up with the blood tests to keep track of it.
All the best for your infusion.

I am 10 years post op. I need iron infusions every few years.

I have struggled with iron since pre-op, but it really tanked post-op. I did all the things that everyone says and was taking the bariatric iron with no luck.
I realized that I am just not absorbing it orally, so I am now taking 6 sublingual pills a day, plus wearing iron patches.
In a year, I was able to raise my Ferritin from 11 to 45 on my own without an infusion. But it took diligence and stubbornness to try something that my surgeon didn't recommend. I would still like to see that Ferritin number tripled, but at least it's heading in the right direction!
I'm 9+ years post RNY. I don't have anemia - my iron and hemoglobin levels are good, but my Ferritin levels have tanked a couple of times. Oral or subliminal iron do not help me. I had an iron infusion 3 years ago and just had another one last month. My Ferritin level is good but will probably decrease over the next couple of years.

I had RNY in 2003 and have iron deficiency anemia twice. The first time my doctor had me take oral supplements and it took a year for my blood to normalize -- pretty poor decision on her part.
I recently found out that my iron stores are low again. I had two iron infusions in 2016 when I had anemia and now I need another. Unfortunately the infusions seriously aggravate my GI tract quite a bit.
It is also sad to be in an infusion center with all the cancer patients... they were all in good spirits but, geez, you know they are critically ill and it is heart-breaking. One woman asked me about my health and I felt so bad to tell her that I had iron deficiency anemia while her situation was life-threatening.
The infusions themselves take quite a while but they are painless.
