Yes I had pain that required IV pain medicine. I went home on by mouth pain medicine.

A doctor that says no to narcotics and yes to any NSAIDS would require much more discussion from me before any surgery would be done. You do know post surgery we can't have NSAIDS?

Some require less medicine but to blanket say no prior to surgery? Nope. Wouldn't do it.

Congrats on your surgery date. What you are saying about your surgeon's information on pain control sounds wrong though from my experience.

For the 2 days that I was in the hospital, I had IV narcotics. I went home on oral oxy and used it regularly for 3 more days. The for the next week or so I used it at night or if I was up and moving more than usual. Tylenol does very little to help the pain for most people and I never would have been able to manage the pain without the narcotics for a while.

The really scary part of what your surgeon said is that he might prescribe you an NSAID like Motrin. NSAIDS will tear apart your new pouch and are strictly forbidden for RNY patients and now for most WLS patients.

I realize that narcotics like oxy have a really bad name now because they can be addictive. That said modest doses for a limited time to manage what otherwise would be severe pain is not a bad thing. I suggest that you discuss pain management more fully with your surgeon and come up with a better plan than oral Tylenol.

Not to scare you, but pain can be severe for some people even who have lap surgery. You need to be prepared and grateful if you don't need it.

I thought there might be some back story. If a surgeon said no pain meds to all his patients after surgery, I would think he was a quack.

Good luck in getting your surgery with the least amount of pain.

I don't like the feeling from narcotics so I barely used the pump for pain Meds in the hospital (that actually yelled at me for not using it more).

I had bought liquid Tylenol (it's for kids) and just took an adult dose. I switched to that as soon as I left the hospital. I did take the liquid oxy at night for the first 3 nights, though.

I am allergic to most opiates, they give me nausea and vomiting and Tylenol does nothing for me. That being said I was given dilaudid for pain after surgery. I only took 1 pill the night I got home from the hospital. I didn't really have that much pain, only the large incision on the left would hurt when I would bend over.

Pain is subjective. I have a high pain threshold so what my experience was will differ from anyone else.

I was drinking water right away after surgery but they only want you to drink an ounce at a time. They also want you up and walking as soon as possible. I spent one night in the hospital and was so happy to go home. Hospitals are terrible places to try to get any sleep. I think it is much easier and peaceful to heal at home.

I would discuss with your surgeon and come up with a plan before surgery. But you will be fine!

people are all across the board with pain with this, but I would say most experience very little pain. I really didn't feel much pain. It was mostly really sore abs, as if I'd done 1000 crunches - which made transitions (like from lying down to sitting up) a *****allenging. But if I was just lying there, then no - i didn't have much pain.

I had a morphine pump in the hospital which the nurses made me use to make it easier to get out of bed and walk - but if it weren't for that, I probably wouldn't have used it. They sent me home with some liquid oxycodone, but I never opened the bottle.

Tylenol really doesn't do anything for me, either...
