Depression after surgery

How does that disprove my point? Yes, there are effective treatments, but there's absolutely the possibility for improvement.

Im not trying to disprove anything.
All I wanted to prove was that I didn't pull a study out of thin air.
AvsChic18,
Yes! to both questions. It is part of the journey and your meds may not be as effectively absorbed, especially this close to surgery, and if those meds are 24 hour/daily dose ones... and combined many other changes that are taking place, in this period that should be your time of greatest weight loss.
Yes I agree with the other ones who have posted. .. if it is going to be a few days before you can see a medical provider for evaluation begin by getting more sunshine and possibly boosting vitamin D3 to 10 thousand a day.. B complex sublingual can also help, as long as your iron is not too high.It always gives me an energy boost. If you can not get out in sunshine add a daylight bulb to a favorite sitting place, and enjoy crafts or reading material under that light for 30-45 min.
Yo may find if these things are used the dose of meds you are on may be enough, but you need professional assistance to evaluate because of long term history...Keeping a diet diary..include .protein, fluid and carb counts, with a indicator for feelings, as evaluated at end of day..... carb increases can trigger depressive episodes in some people.
Medically when you see your provider for anti depressant evaluation... be sure to think back is there a time when the depression is worse, in relation to your medication...( for example, consider these questions and document... does it "wear off" in 18 hours instead of 24? , does depressive episode begin at same time each day? and is it related to a change o drop in activity.? if so , 15 min of walking could help .) record these to the extent you can,for your provider. They may prove invaluable.
Also be sure to ask for a weight negative anti depressant if possible, some have side effects that involve making people hungry and are known for making people gain large amounts of weight...( for example tegretol that is used for seizures, depression).
Weight loss can be an emotional roller coaster if YOU allow it to be.I think you should "change our mind" consider it a blessing, consider body changes as expected and embrace those.
Smile at these changes.
As people see you , that have not seen you in 6-9 months, see you and don't know who you are -until you speak... Stop focusing on the bad, you are loosing, but focus on what you are gaining. .... Ability to tie shoes, ability to walk up stairs, ability to play with children or engaage in an exercise you had not attempted previously..Now would be a good time to add a regimented exercise class ..CD's are available to use in privacy of your home until you build your ability and stamina...
One way to do this is to observe yourself daily in a full length mirror.. notice you can see your knees, can see your changes in your face as excess tissue is lost in the reverse order it was put on... the last places you gained will be the first fat to leave.
Thank you for coming forward and having the courage to write about your struggle. Everyone of us has some struggle.
Know you are not alone!
You are worth putting every effort into getting the assistance you need. Hang in there! We are here to encourge you and cheer you on!

There are very few "weight negative" drugs out there. The only three I'm aware of are Topamax (which tends to cause serious cognitive impairment and fries your memory), Wellbutrin, and Lexapro. And even on those, people can and do gain weight; they're just LESS likely to do so.

Julie,
Many people are not aware that ANY drug CAN cause weight gain.I was not aware of it until my Dr mentioned that should we require anti depressant, to ask if one was available in this category. This is just a general statement and many new medications (in all classifications)are out, since I was exposed to them and their possibilities.
Any one *****gularly prescribes would be aware of the SIDE effects of what they are prescribing..and make the best choices for an individual based on the data they have..ALL drugs have side effects, some are expected and desired and some not desired.
If a prescriber knows a client is aware of possible side effects, then , a lower dose might be initiated and closer monitoring might be indicated, to minimize Un-desirable side effects.
It is common practice to initiate a drug with a lower dose and build that dose over a several days...that is why some drugs like ZOLOFT which was considered weight negative,@ one time, was initiated in 12.5 mg, with step ups to 25 mg, then 50 mg .
Since I no longer use prescription meds, I simply do not keep up with each possible medication. Each one *****quires meds for any medical condition should be fully informed as to expected outcomes. That is why the pharmacist pulls someone aside to make sure they are instructed on side effects and proper ways and times to take meds. I am an advocate for medication information availability and understanding about all aspects of those.

I'm sorry, but I find this statement INCREDIBLY offensive to someone with a mental illness. Depression is NEVER the patient's fault and is NOT the result of a lack of control.

The statement was not meant to offend. Nor did I intend to infer that depression is anyones fault. We do not disagree on this aspect of what I said. Weight loss without any other issues can be an emotional roller coaster ride.
I was considering the "allowing" as someone who chooses not to address issues. That clearly does NOT apply to this person because they are seeking advise and help.
That is the way we regain control of emotional issues, by seeking assistance and advise.
I was NOT speaking as someone outside looking in, but someone experienced with both depression and weight loss. Weight loss Alone can be an emotionnal roller coaster ,...would have been a better way to put it. The weight loss aspect that can trigger depression in ones who have not had prior depression. Those who have depression already by history or actively have a doubly hard time. We must actively choose to address health issues. Roller Coasters have both brakes and exits. We must choose to use both.
I had depression at one time. I overcame mine with medication for a time and thru different various private therapies.( free but intense) On must take charge of their own health at some point, or choose to be forever a victim and be sick. The range of mental health issues is a vast maze of symptoms.
Seeking help and information is just one way this orig poster has started to take charge., of her life and symptoms.

I'm glad you overcame your depression. But for many people who struggle with mental illness, it is incredibly difficult to "choose" to get better when you're living in the deep dark hole of depression. It's not that simple for everybody.

I have bipolar, and I've been on meds for nearly 15 years. In that time, I've had to do a LOT of medication changes. That's totally normal!
Can I ask what med(s) you're taking now? There are a few that can be less effective after WLS, including anything in an extended-release formula.
