Caffeine is a stimulant. If anything it speeds up metabolism (how much?) and inhibits appetite.

I used to use Splenda. Now that I'm at a normal weight I use good old fashioned sugar.

I'm a normal weight and at goal too but sugar is a serious trigger for me. I don't know if it's in my head or not but if I have a little I want a lot and can be on a bender all day if I do so. Wish I had your control.

My control is...... just ok. I guess my sweets philosophy is "make it count" ... if I'm going I eat something bad it's got to be good. Nothing overly processed. Minimal ingredients.

But obviously everybody needs to follow their own path.

Scott,

I also use a little sugar, but realize some people don't have that control. The more natural we can go with our food the btter off we will be in the long run.

My tolerance for it is limited too, makes blood sugars plummet. I learned control when could have none , and became intolerant of almost all artifical sweetners. I don't cook for one, but several, and food has to have flavor -sweetness is a desired flavor for my non-weight challenged family. I limit my portion sizes and or have a different desert..(just fruit instead of peach pie..for example.)

Yep, Caffeine helps weight loss,.. generally ..as does ice water.

Correlation does not equal causation. Fat people are far more likely to use artificial sweeteners. Therefore a high percentage of the people who use artificial sweeteners are fat. Correlation does not equal causation.

There's no question that a sweet taste can be a trigger for some folks, and it's possible that some artificial sweeteners are so sweet that they shift the palate and drive a higher sugar consumption to get the same level of sweetness. I think both of those are very individual.

There's no physiological reason why caffeine should cause weight gain - quite the opposite, in fact. Sleep deprivation causes weight gain, and maybe there's an indirect correlation there, but again, not causation.

I put Splenda in my coffee and my herbal iced tea. I eat artificially sweetened yogurt. I'm way more likely to overdo it on noodles than on sugary desserts, so I don't worry about it much (and I'm 7 months out from RnY and have not eaten a single noodle, because that's a slippery slope I don't want to step on to).

I don't know any answers, but I'll tell you what my doctor said last month. I was told to cut all artificial sweeteners, carbonation and caffeine. (At 18 years post-op I got hooked on Diet Mt Dew). However, I was still allowed to drink tea and coffee which has caffeine, and all the sugar free kool-aid or crystal lite I wanted, which has artificial sweeteners. All I know is my reset has worked very well and helped me to get motivated to remove the excess regain I've acquired over the years.

Glad your reset has worked for you...kep on the plan You can do it.!!!

Carbonation is a real issue with me... still do not tolerate it.Many years post op!

..I got a twisted intestine one when in recovery from gastritis, I ate some cheese 1 oz in 2 oz inst potates before going to work...and drank a cola,(Ihad been sick and it was hot,and hot work enviroment),..in 2 hours,. landed me in the hospital for 5 days with a tube in both ends. One to intermittent suction, the other to a oil retention enema. If your doc says "no" to carbination,. I suggest you listen and comply!

Drinks... for me are:Water, coffee, , lactose milk(4 oz day), protein drink once a month? lemon juice occassionally to water.- 2 or 3 x in summer...(no sweetner.in that lemon water)

These stories come up from time to time. Back in the early 1990's there were postings about how people who used Splenda were going blind.

Nobody gains weight from caffeine or from artificial sweeteners.
