I am 40 years old, 5'6 tall, and 277 was my heaviest ever weight (a few weeks ago). My size 22w dresses are getting tight. I attended an info session and chose to meet with the dr who gave the presentation for the practice. He seems pretty no nonsense which I like. I am opting for the RNY because it sounds better for me and I recall one of the things the dr said at the info session was that for folks who have GERD the RNY is the way to go. I had the initial consult on Mon, and saw the nutrition and exercise people today. I have 6 months of classes to complete, an endoscopy, psych evaluation etc. so surgery around Christmas I guess. OMGosh.

I am hopeful that RNY will make my fatty liver resolve, along with my high cholesterol and hormonal problems. I think somewhere around 150 pounds sounds ideal. It's a little unbelievable to me that I am doing this, as I am a big needlephobe.

Congratulations! As a relatively new post op (4 months), use the 6 months to get used to your programs guidelines. Everything you do now, will help you in the long run!! It's not easy but it is worth it!

Congrats! I started out almost exactly at your metrics and I'm almost into a size 18 pants now (one month post op) so strap yourself in because it's an exciting and fast ride! I agree with others that this is a great time to try and make any lifestyle changes you can to help you out post op. Some goods ones would be giving up sodas (even diet), reducing eating out, and starting some sort of exercise if you aren't already. You may very well lose a good amount of weight by the time you go in for surgery!

PS - I haven't had GERD issues since surgery and that was a big thing for me too, and as for the fatty liver, that is also resolved by the program very quickly.

Welcome! I am 4 weeks post op and so by far a newbie. However, I can say that I used my 6 months pre-op supervised diet to start weaning myself from things that I knew I shouldn't be eating. I was a major sugarholic and that was something I had to get a handle on. Also, I started going to the support meetings at my Drs office.

Good luck to you! You are starting a new chapter in your life!

OMG....Your story sounds so much like mine. 41, 5'2", highest weight was 269 in January. 6 months prep as per insurance company. I was also diagnosed with fatty liver, my GERD can be awful...the sleep study showed mild sleep apnea with weight loss as the prescribed treatment. I'm now down to 219 and hoping for surgery in September or October.

I am also terrified...I've never had surgery other than wisdom teeth. But, I'm so glad I found this community. People have been great about answering questions and sharing their successes and challenges. I think going into this with as much data as possible will be helpful.

I'm 40, 5'5, and was 320 the day of my consult. I got down to 294 the day of surgery, and now I'm 2 months post-surgery. Today was my 2 month appointment and I weigh 260. I can't believe I've lost 60 lbs since the day of my consultation- I was in 4x tops and 24/26 bottoms and now i'm wearing size 20 jeans and shorts and 2x tops. I chose RNY because I have a history of GERD/ulcer, and I wanted to lose the most possible weight and keep it off. So far, I don't regret it for a single second. I have a goal weight of 150, even though it's very possible that I might never get there. (My nurse practitioner thinks it's pretty unrealistic because I've been obese for more than 20 years, but I'm gonna try-- and if i get to 175 and feel like that's where I want to be, I'll adjust my goal.)

Needles-- just look away. I don't like having blood drawn, but I am heavily tattooed so I don't have much excuse.

You can do it!
