Protein bar recommendations

There are a few sites that sell sampler packs. My Bariatric Pal is one of them. It was great to try them all. Some of the good ones, but didn't love for Quest were also Banana, Lemon and Mocha chip. of those 3 I like the Mocha chip only in cookie form. The others are a bit subtle.

I have had the One bar - birthday cake version. My husband likes the peanut butter pie and the coconut almond One bars. I don't eat them often because sometimes they make my belly hurt.

You can't measure your achievements with someone else's yardstick!

If I have a bar, I've found that lately-the Oh Yeah One bars are best suited for me. The last time I had a Quest bar, I felt awful. I liked Chocorite bars, but I can't find them anymore.

I will carry the babybel cheeses or a cheese stick or two with me when I leave the house if it's close to meal time for me. I also like the mozzarella/meat paninos made by Fiorucci.

You can always eat a 1/2 of a bar if that's all you have on hand.

Quest bars are my favorite but I eat them like candy and they trigger cravings for me. The Raw Rev Glo Creamy Peanut Butter bars are the ones I eat the most. They are delicious, only 3g net carb, no sugar alcohols or artificial sweeteners, 180 calories and 15g protein.

Ingredients are: Peanuts, pea protein, organic brown rice protein, raw organic hemp protein, raw organic virgin coconut oil, raw organic chia seeds, raw organic sprouted flax seeds, Prebiotic Fiber from Tapioca, sea Salt.

I love Quest bars. My favorite is their birthday cake flavor. I make a cup of hot coffee and dip it in and eat it for a meal maybe twice a week at the most.

The calculation I was instructed to look in protein bars was: under 200 calories and over 15 grams of protein. Some WLSers call protein bars nothing but glorified candy bars but I don't find protein bars anywhere near tasty enough to compare to Nestle, Mars, Hershey, Godiva, Cadbury...ok ok stop. I just tried a protein bar called Pure Protein in the flavor Chocolate Deluxe that was surprisingly edible. It has 21 g protein, 3 g sugar, 180 calories, and $1.25 on sale.

oh yea - Pure Protein bars are pretty good, too. I like their peanut butter one, too.

I've probably checked the nutritional value of every protein bar on the market. So many of them are high in sugar and carbs. I love Kind bars but you might as well eat a candy bar as far as the nutrition. I liked some of the Quest bars when they first came out, but not any more. Even a half a bar makes me feel sick plus I don't like the taste. Power Crunch is very good but they contain soy and I have an allergy to soy so I can't eat them very often.

Atkins has some good tasting bars but they too contain soy.

I eat pretty well any flavour of the Pure Protein bar for breakfast daily throughout the work week, followed by sipping a coffee. The NUT has said they prefer to see us eat regular food, but if I handle them OK they were OK with it. On the weekend I don't eat them or go near protein shakes, all regular food. It's a convenience thing for me as I'm a cycle commuter. They weigh pretty well nothing so it isn't adding weight to the backpack, which already has a lunch bag, a change of clothes, some basic bike tools and a lock in it. Sometimes other stuff I might need at the office (umbrella, extra shoes/boots, etc.) Every little bit helps in my case, especially in winter riding with the bulk of extra clothing.

The NUT said if I'm going to go the bar route, to stick to the 10/100 rule. 10g protein for every 100 calories. So a 200 calorie bar has to have at minimum 20g protein. Pure Protein meets that (within a few calories either way) and is available in a box of 18 for around $1 a piece. Some flavours I like better than others, but they're all OK and allow me to easily plan caloric intake throughout the week. It doesn't work for everybody but it works for me for 1 (or sometimes 2 if I'm running late) meals per day Monday-Friday. The snacks and supper are always protein-forward food.
