Power Crunch bars are a 'candy' trigger for me. I also got that same feeling today eating one of the Vanilla Caramel Quest Hero bars, but didn't when I ate two other flavors. Very strange what triggers us!

Early out I used to carry protein bars in a sandwich bag, that way I could break off a piece without eating the whole thing, and not waste it either. They are expensive.

Power Crunch are a favorite and the texture might be easier when you are early out.

The ON cake bites are good, they have more calories for the whole package, but there are three in there do you can eat just one.

I am with the others in saying the Quest bars are the ones that meet my nutritional standards, but just don't taste good to me at all... Grim eats them every day, and I steal bites sometimes when I am hungry but I always regret it. Yuck--they have a "wet dog" flavor to me...

Now if I need a bar because I am on the go and can't refrigerate, I grab either a Chomps Meat Stick or Epic Meat Bars.

(I buy them at Trader Joe's)

Thank you!! All the feedback is leading me to consider emergency meat to go with my emergency cheese and skip the emergency protein bars!

I have had some luck with mozzarella/prosciutto sticks being very filling as a meal replacement. Kakesie who participates on the thread turned me onto them. In fact I'm bringing one with me for my lunch on the road today.

Many people like Quest bars but for me - they made me really sick. The fiber they used to use caused BS fluctuating for me. Plus I got horrible nausea and gas.

Most protein bars have a lot of heavily processed ingredients. IMO - most of them are glamorized candy bars.

They can be ok when you are stuck somewhere and can't get real food.

I use nuts, or yerky. I also have and carry individual packs of almond butter. I often get the Justin's packs, with no sugar added. They save me many times.

The other thing to consider is gas due to fiber and Sugar Alcohols. At home it may be not a big deal, but ...I made a huge mistake eating one bar when I boarded a plain. Sitting for 4 hour flight, without being able to pass the gass...ugh. I was in so much pain. After that experince - I got very very careful what I eat when traveling. I learned to test the snack well in advance to any travel. Be worn.

I don't eat them often, either (maybe once a month or so for "emergencies"), but I'll eat Quest or Oh Yeah One, usually (if you get "Oh Yeah", make sure it's "Oh Yeah One" - those have one gram of sugar. The regular "Oh Yeah" bars have a lot more sugar than that). Power Crunch are also pretty good but don't fill me up as much. Quest Hero bars are great but I try to avoid them for that reason - they taste like candy bars and I can totally see myself binging on them given the "right" (or rather, "wrong") situation....

I laughed when I saw this thread pop up. Another one that gets such split responses. I like bars, but only use them occasionally. I also favor chicken protein (Caveman Primal Chicken bars or Ostrim Buffalo Chicken sticks - check them out - really good profile and fair to good shelf life). The best way for me with bars is to make Quest bars into cookies from the Eggface site. They freeze well and last a long time. The batch I have in the freezer was made 5 weeks ago and I've barely put a dent. However, I took 4 (equiv half bar) with me when I had my fasting physical this weekend. That way I had something to eat after the draw. But like others, I find only a few of the flavors taste good - some taste like soap (sadly mint for me - usually my fav flavor). My favs are Raspberry, Peanut Butter Supreme, Oatmeal choc chip, double choc chip, Birthday cake (this would seem to be a weird cookie as they are soft - but they turn out to be the best cookie).

I'm a big profile eater and find only 3 brands fit the bill. Quest, One bar and ON Cake Bites. They are all at or above the 10g per 100 calories or very very close. However, I buy box sizes and end up tossing half the box because I can't finish by the expiration (and I keep them well past). But many websites sell samplers or single bars (netrition.com) also many of the best ones from Quest are sold by Walmart in 4 packs or singles too.

Oh I remember reading about the quest bar cookies pre surgery! I will check them out again! And also the ostrim sticks - I've seen those on the menu thread!
