Protein bar recommendations
on 5/20/18 2:59 pm
hi all! I have a general question - I was given a formula to use to determine if a protein shake met the post surgery requirements (5 grams of carbs or less, 20 grams of protein or more) but don't have a calculation for what makes a good protein bar. I don't want to use them often but I think it might be good to have a gauge in mind if I get in a pinch and need one. Thank you in advance for any suggestions!

The only protein bar that I like barely makes the cut for me nutrition wise- but like them. I hated any of the quest bars.
190 calories
14g carb
10g protein
if I counted net carbs- it would only be 9g carbs. You can get a bigger protein count in other brands- but I think you sacrifice flavor.
Mine are the nature valley, protein- dark chocolate/peanut

I pretty much won't eat any that don't have 20g of protein and less than 5g of net carbs. Normally they are in the 200 calorie range.
One exception is that Quest Hero bars because they use Allulose which the FDA requires to be added to the sugar count but does not raise blood sugar (many artificial sweeteners still raise your BS/cause an insulin response: Maliltol being #1 on that list).

I haven't really tried much with the sugar alcohols yet -- another thing to wait and try at home!

I've been told no nuts for the first year but jerky seems like a good option!

Honestly didn't start eating nuts until I hit maintenance. Now I make my own trail mix with nuts and seeds.

Nuts don't fill me up much and I have a tendency to eat too much of them (so too many calories). I do better on protein bars but they can't be too much like candy. For instance I have to stay away from Pure Portein Salted Caramel bars. I do fine on Quest bars.
