Stuck and defeated

So I had surgery August 2017- and so far have lost 50lbs. I am concerned that I've lost zero pounds since January 2018. That's 5 months yo-yoing between 220-225 lbs. My goal is 170lbs. I have incorporated working out 4-5 times a week in a kickboxing class for 60 min. I make sure to walk 30 min daily. I'm hoping that will help. I also am recognizing I need to work on my diet and protein intake. I need motivation in that area. What do you all suggest to jump start weight loss again? I'm feeling defeated.

Back to basics. Protein first, then veg. Cut out the crap food and wasted carbs and sugar. Measure, weigh, and track every single bite. Get in your minimum 64oz of fluid per day. Exercise is great, but it's about being fit, not losing weight. The only way to lose weight is to take in fewer calories than you expend.

I'm 18 months post op and I still weigh, measure and track everything I eat. If I don't, I know I overeat...simple. I need the accountability. I'm willing to keep doing the work in order to never gain the weight back and be that person I used to be.

Good luck!

Losing weight is about diet, diet and diet. That goes for anybody. RNY is about restricting calories. Sounds like you may have forgotten that. If you want to lose weight you need to back to calorie restriction and step one is to say goodbye to sugars and carbs.

Walking is great but 30 mins a day is not much. That?s about 3,000 steps. I?d aim for 10,000.

You still have your tool and that?s a big advantage.

Wow~ We don't see this very often to be honest. The majority of people will lose a significant amount of weight in the first year or so post-RnY even if they don't decrease the amount of calories they consume. (In general at least, due to malabsorption.)

What are you eating every day? Can you post what you ate yesterday here? There are many experienced vets who can troubleshoot and make solid suggestions just by looking at a day's menu.

Something isn't right. If you're counting on burning off any calories through exercise, stop doing that. Exercise is great for lots of reasons but it's no where close in importance to calorie reduction.

You've got less than approx. 90 days of your post surgery "honeymoon period" left. If you want to make any substantial progress towards your ultimate goal you need to reduce your calorie input immediately and in a big way. If you are already under about 800 calories/day you'd probably better get an appointment with your surgeon to make sure nothings wrong.

Without details it's very hard to offer support. Go ahead and post the day's menu so folks can take a look. Make sure you are measuring every bit of food exactly, for calories, carbs etc. Eat protein first, then non-carby veggies. Drink at least 64 ounces of fluids daily. More than that is better.

That's it. At least until you've gotten a solid pattern of losing established. Frankly in the first year most of us have zero extra room for anything if we are eating dense protein first.

Show us what you're doing and I'm almost certain you'll get some tips that will have a positive impact. And get on it now - you've not got any time to waste. Good luck, I hope we hear back from you right away.

you apparently are eating so many calories you have put yourself into maintenance.

Mist of us have to eat 600-800 cals only a day, no liquid calories except prortrin drinks, very little non carby vegs and and meat, chicken, fish, eggs and cheese, primarily.

64+ oz of no cal liquid a day.

No bread, crackers, wraps, flour/ baked good / products, no chips no alcohol.

All great advice above.

Eating fewer calories is the only thing that will make the scale move. Weigh and track everything you eat, to the smallest fraction of an ounce.

I see from your history that you posted somewhere on the forum almost this same message 3 months ago. You got a very similar response. Did you change anything? It's time for a very detailed review of your eating habits. I wonder if your program is one of those that eats carbs as a main part of the program. You might need to tear up what you are doing or what you believe to get this done. Something isn't right and from all of your history, this seems like an ongoing issue right from your first solid food post surgery. I think your daily participation in the menu forum is your main commitment and ask for help from the vets. I'll bet you are doing things in your program that aren't helping you or your eating things that you aren't counting. My aunt did that - little bites here and there throughout the day. She never realized how many calories that added up to and was surprised when I pointed out she was eating about 1000 extra a day - she thought it was less than 100 (I had to spend the day with her cooking for a catering party she was working).

Be honest with yourself about how much you are eating and cut back. Measure and track every bite somewhere like myfitnesspal. Do not use exercise as an excuse to eat more. That plan never works. It's 90% what and how much you eat.

Stop making excuses if you really want to reach your goal.

Good luck.

Like others have said - look at your food intake before the activity and other parts. Also look at the mechanics of your diet.

  • Restart the 1 hour ban on liquids around meal times (stop drinking 30 minutes before and don't have a sip for at least 30 minutes after a meal).
  • Eat protein first - and aim for 100 g a day
  • TRACK every BITE of food no matter how bad - you can't fix it if you don't see it
  • Cut out the white stuff - simple carbs have got to go - no sugar, flour, white rice.
