My surgery went fine. Had lap for the the RNY but my surgery was a twofer since I was getting an incisional hernia repair as well. As it turned out, that had to be an open surgery so I have this long incision that is pretty painful.

So I learned the mantra walk walk walk sip sip sip and then repeat. I got home abt 9ish last night and went to bed. So at 2:45 am I start counting my 1 oz cups per 15 mins. Not enough hours in the day! It's 10:45 pm And I only have 30 and only 7 of that is protein shake. I just cant make room. Im too full. Im doing what they sd abt 1 protein then a sifderent fluid cuz 2 ozs of protein in a half hour makes me too full. Im doing protein water too but for 15 gems in a 16 oz bottle isn't much so I'm just counting that as a fluid.

I came home 10lbs heavier with arms and legs swollen. So maybe what fluid my body needs , can be drawn from that until I can work up to 2 ozs in 15 mins. Thoughts?

Pamela "WELCOME TO THE CLUB!!!
Glad all went well. Congrats!!!!
Fluid is fluid, Protein > water, soup, or shake, its ALL fluids!!! Your all swollen right now so do what you can, you will be fine! I think I had a case of popsicles my first week or so. LOL It felt good going down! You can make popsicles out of your flavored protein water also, that way your still getting your fluids and your protein in but just in a different form.
Time will fly by and before you know it you will be getting your required amounts!!! This is the exciting part so make sure you have a belt or rope or something to hold up your pants because your going to just melt away!!! LOL Relax and keep the updates coming!

Congratulations Pamela! So nice to have you join us on the Loser's Bench! Getting all of my water in in the beginning was quite an overwhelming task for me. I wasn't able to get all of my fluids in for several weeks, but I kept moving towards that goal. You will too. It gets much easier in time. I gained 10 or 11 pounds from surgery too, but it was gone in short order. Do your very best to hydrate and to move and everything will work out well! Very happy for you!

Welcome home and congratulations! Sounds like you are on the right track! For the first week, my surgeon said hydration and movement were my number 1 and 2 and after that cane protein. Stay on track and you'll do great!!

Sorry about that incision. Did you know that going in or was it one of those Post-op surprises?

Consuming anything this early out is just so difficult. I dont miss those days. I kept an 8 oz wattle bottle next to my bed and tried to get that in before getting up. A protein shake and a big hot decaf something and I was halfway to my protein and liquid goals by noon.

It'll get easier. Good luck.

Yes I knew I was going for a twofer with hope that the repair was going to be a lap too, but signed consent for open. Only bad thing is that using the disovable mesh might required another surgery later. Ugh! Nut hopefully losing some belly weight will extend the life of this fix.

Thanks for the well wishes!

Congrats on getting through surgery! It really sounds like you are doing great! All of the IV fluids and swelling from surgery really does add pounds at first, but it goes down quickly if you are moving. Walk slowly for short distances, but got often. It really helps to get the blood, bowels and bladder working well and that helps to remove the chemicals from your body.

I can also sympathize that it is really hard to get in all of your fluids plus some protein at first. Just stay hydrated and the rest will come. I consumed LOTS of SF popsicles and herbal tea in the first few weeks. I found that the different temperatures were easier to get down than room temperature water. Now, 15 months later, I drink almost a gallon of fluids a day, but we all started where you are and worked our way up.

Hang in there. It gets better and then lots better and then great, but the progress can seem very slow.
