I tend to agree but those BMI requirements are as far as I know for American medical insurance companies. As we know now she's a European paying out of pocket so it's all sort of moot.

But I do believe RNY is an extreme measure for someone who may be able to knock her BMI out of the obese range by dieting for several months.

There may even be the question of whether a surgeons malpractice insurer would cover the procedure.

If dieting worked, none of us would be here.

also, dieting will do nothing to address the damage and complications the band created.

Not to get into a back and forth here but people do lose weight without the assistance of bariatric surgery. People also gain weight after bariatric surgery. Menu threads are filled with people "on diets".

SUre they do. I lost over 1000lbs in my lifetime and dieted my way up to 260lbs...you'd be hard pressed to find anyone on a board who hadn't lost weight on a diet..yet here we all are. Dieting has a 95% failure over the long term. That is what the stats say...

They wouldn't be doing bariatric surgery if the failure rates looked like that. I'm sure you are up to speed on the stats on bariatric surgery and we all know there is some weight regain, but gaining 110% after a bypass is as rare as keeping off weight loss without it.

If dieting worked, none of us would be here.

Conversely I could say that none us would be here if our starting BMI was 32.4

It isn't her starting BMI, it is her current. You are conveniently ignoring that she is a revision.

Betting it was higher before her lap band and after her lap band was lower. My lowest BMI after being banded was 29...it eventually got to 44 with the complications...that is where she is heading. My starting BMI was 40 before the band, I Wish I'd revised before letting it get to 44 and letting the band cause permanent damage to my esophagus etc

she will qualify in about 10 lbs.. why wait...still doesn't make sense? No more sense than reversing an rny once someone has gotten to a healthy weight.

If someone removed your tool now and said just diet. You would struggle too and you would regain..

I might. I might not. I might regain with the tool intact. What I won't do is pretend to know the answer right now and frankly neither should you.

This is a ridiculous exchange. I agree with Travelher I revised to RNY at a BMI of 24 (a normal BMI) because of GERD. So, would it have been your opinion that I should not have further surgery to cure the GERD that resulted from my VSG, simply because I was no longer considered overweight???

My situation is a bit different because I didn't have a band that could just have been removed. However, if the OP has unrelenting GERD and believes she will gain weight (as she said she is doing) as a result of losing her band, AND is willing to pay out of pocket for another WLS (be it mini bypass or full RNY) I see no reason for her not to do it. It is unlikely that she will lose too much weight or that her BMI will fall into the underweight category. What is likely is that her persistent GERD will resolve, she will dodge the bullet that is Barrett's esophagus, she can lose the regain that occurred when her band was removed, and she may have a shot at maintaining a healthy weight.

Oooh! Oooh! I know the answer!

We'd all be screwed without surgery. No ifs, ands, or buts. We may like to think we are completely changed, but we aren't.

may I respectfully ask why you didn't just " lose weight", without surgery if It is so easy?
