I posted some good info on this recently: http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/amos/6032156/Helpful-vitam in-info/#50406259

Take your vitamins religiously. Meet or exceed the ASMBS recommendations, which usually means a double-dose of a multivitamin, calcium, and iron pills. Do not slack on this, even temporarily.

Get blood drawn on a regular basis and track the results yourself. Even if your levels are good, you need to watch the change over time to see if anything is declining. Prepare to adjust your supplement regime accordingly.

Hi,

I'm 71/2 years out from RNY. I have taken all my vitamins religiously and have not had a problem other than my iron getting a little low a year ago. The DR. recommended I take an iron supplement and it took me some research and experimenting before I found the right type - who knew there were so many different types of iron! 2 years after my surgery I moved 1,200 miles away from my surgeon, and it's really hard to find a GP that knows bariatric surgery aftercare. So I have had to be vigilant and do my research, ask questions, and make sure I had the knowledge I needed to make it happen. I get my blood work done every year and the numbers come back very good. The important thing is to take your supplements - if you don't have the surgery, you will be on meds. You wouldn't just stop taking those because you felt better! At least I hope not. Vitamins for us is our meds. We don't need Lipitor, Metformin, and a host of others, but we need our multi vitamins, our calcium, etc. Take ownership of your health.

I will be eleven years out in October. Most of my vitamin levels are fine. Iron is not. My body no longer absorbs enough iron from capsules. This is part of the surgery. Even if you are religious about vitamins the part of the system that absorbs some nutrients has been removed.

So you take your vitamins and supplements, but also never skip the labs.

So how will you fix the low iron issue? Another form of iron other than capsule?

10 years out always good ..except iron ... I changed to Carbonyl iron just last year and increased (doubled) my iron and now normal. I take my vitamins religiously. Carbonyl iron absorbed much better.

2 calcium Citrate in the morning- 2 more in the afternoon. (CVS brand)

separate D3 vitamin

2 prenatal vitamins (1 in morn, 1 in afternoon) (Caremark stop and shop brand)

2 magnesium- mid morning (miracle worker for leg and foot cramps early out)

1 sublingual b12 in morning

iron Carbonyl iron at night ...when low taking 2 ... just dropped back to 1 pill since normal ferritin now (ferritin was on low side last year) but iron was on high side in January so dropped back to one pill since my ferritin is now normal range.

Good luck to you!

18 months out, and I have a number of supplements that I now take daily, including calcium (chewable), iron, D3, biotin, a probiotic, a multi, B-12 (sub-lingual), and Vitamin C (chewable).

My latest blood test results show that I'm doing things right.

Wishing you the very best on your own surgery and results. :)
