although statistically there are more complication risks with the RNY, complications with either surgery are pretty rare, and those that do occur are usually minor. Other than a stricture early on (which affects about 5% of RNY patients - and as such, it's one of the more common complications), I haven't had any issues. Many of us haven't.

Like you I was on the fence but I was a long time reflux sufferer and I had no hiatal hernia. Those factors swayed me to RNY.

What are are your reasons for choosing RNY over sleeve?

The biggest reason is because you lose more weight. I have bad knees and both need replaced. With the weight that I am the doctors wont replace. I've been contemplating this WLS for a couple of years and now the knee pain is what is pushing me to go for it.

Well this is definitely something you want to decide with your surgeon.

I guess RNY patients generally lose weight a bit quicker and I guess the "honeymoon" lasts a bit longer. We do have an extra tool but that tool requires daily maintenance. On the other hand one's ultimate success really depends on how committed one is to eating the right way.

I think both surgeries are good choices. I would have gotten the sleeve if my reflux wasn't an issue. But I do believe there are RNYers in here that were originally sleeve and they developed reflux after and opted to revise to RNY.

I am one former VSGer who never had reflux prior to surgery but developed it as a consequence.

I was very determined to get my RNY, but then I had a panic attack the day before and almost scrapped the whole thing. Last minute nerves are very normal.

Here's my advice: research like crazy, talk to as many people as possible, attend a weight loss surgery support group session, listen to what professionals directly involved with bariatric surgery what he/she have to say, write down ALL the information from doing all of the above, then make a PRO/CON chart. I think your decision will become more clear ----OR---- make you more confused than ever. If the latter, then maybe a postponed surgery date might be worth considering.

I was back and forth between the two as well - but I went with the bypass because I've already had 2 lap bands. I researched the sleeve and see that there are A LOT of revisions from sleeve to bypass and I just want to be DONE. I don't want to go through this surgery again. That was the research that swayed me - the revisions. :-) Everyone will have their own non-negotiables, but the advice that you've been given here is GREAT. This is a BIG decision and to be sure, you need to be comfortable with what you decide. YOU are the only one that can decide what is right for you. :-)

Good luck - and we are all here for you!
