RNY and Endometriosis

I am currently pre-op and just started the process. I just got out of an appointment with my gynecologist confirming that I have endometriosis and that the next course of action for me and specially with my RNY in the works that I get an IUD (Mirena?). I am just wondering if anyone has had to deal with endometriosis along with getting the surgery and how the surgery has effected you, and what you did to manage it. Did you get an IUD and was it effective? Luckily I have not gotten a lot of pain from endometriosis yet, and of course would like to avoid it. I am not worried about fertility as I have two kids already. Any input helps!

Thanks

Endometriosis is estrogen feed. Hence why doctors try to use contraceptive methods, which help some patients. Others will have to talk about how their hormonal balance changes in that respect changes, but if it doesn't (since estrogen is based on FSH - follical stimulating hormones), you should be okay. Hope all works out. Good luck.

I dont have much to tell you since I am only 8 weeks post op but want to follow this thread since I also have stage 3 endo. I have an appt in 2 weeks for my annual and I am going to ask about getting an IUD too.
My husband and I struggled with infertility for 6 years before we went through IVF but I know that losing the weight can sometimes cause a fertility serge in some women, and as much as I would love to have a miracle baby after going through everything with IVF, I don't want it to happen right after this surgery when I know it would be dangerous to myself and the baby.
Also I have been told that the Mirena IUD can reduce endometriosis by shrinking some of the cells and causing much less pain during menstruation. I am a little nervous about getting an IUD but I think it would be the best thing to do at this point considering BCP's can be much less effective after RNY due to malabsorption.

She told me I have stage 3 as well. I fell the same way about getting the IUD but I also think its going to be the best at this point as well. At least for me, it allows me sometime before surgery to get used to it. I hear lots of success on one side and not so much on the other. My gyno is an advocate for it, but she did warn me that about 20% of people need to get it removed for a reason or another. She also said side effects are moodiness and hunger...I am just hoping that I am in the 80% lot. It's hard when things are so unpredictable. I'm sorry about all your fertility troubles, I wish I could have shared mine when it was at it's peak (I have a 3 and 4 year old), but you are right to definitely wait some time before having a baby after the surgery, at least time for your body to regulate somewhat.

Endo here as well.

We actually started with plain old birth control pills to begin with. It's eased the pain and definately eased the bleeding (which is great, helps with my iron issues). I am going to try to avoid an IUD if I can... so far so good :)

On a positive note, I did speak to my surgeon about my concern that the infamous "hormone dump" that comes after surgery won't worsen endo... he reassures me that it won't. (not the same hormones being dumped haha)

I have endo, and PCOS. After being on BC pills for 4 years I switched to the Kyleena IUD in December as part of my prep for surgery.

So far (I'm not quite 2 months out) I still get bad cramps, but the actual flow is much lighter
